Band to Band Combat is back! The overwhelmingly popular Isthmus online band contest aims to reward not necessarily the best band in Madison, but the one that can get out the vote and win people over with their sound over three rounds of voting and a final competition in front of a live audience.
Previous champs include Birth of Tragedy in 2001, Northern Pines Band in 2002, Jimmy's Comet in 2003 and The Selfish Gene in 2009. Entries have come from near-legendary acts like The Midwest Beat, Sunspot, Headpump, Skintones, The Motorz, The Cutouts, The Dorothy Heralds, New Recruits, Tangy, Droids Attack, Randy Cliffs, Charlemagne, Brainerd... the list goes on.
Nominally a contest, Band to Band Combat has been very successful in getting a lot of Isthmus readers interested in listening to songs from local bands over the length of the competition online. While it's typically the bands with established fan bases that end up closing in on the finals, emerging bands have been able to heighten their profiles through the contest.
Voting in Round One, which runs until noon on Wednesday, November 3, will narrow the field to 16. Round Two will run from Thursday, November 4, until Wednesday, November 10, and halves the contestants to eight bands. The final online voting round, which starts on Thursday, November 11 and ends at noon on Wednesday, November 17, will determine the four finalists which will face off live on Thursday, December 2 at the Majestic Theatre in downtown Madison.
