What has eight legs and a boat for a head? A canoe team in Paddle & Portage!
The quirky race returns to the lakes and streets of Madison for the 34th year on Saturday, July 20.
Competitors of all stripes brave the lakes and cross the land -- professional racers, amateur canoeists, couples, parent-and-child teams, and everyone in between -- all aiming for an energetic good time. Watch for crazy costumes and canoe fanatics to set oar in this quintessential Madison event.
Isthmus is proud to host hundreds of participants from across the country when they descend on downtown, and we are working with an advisory board of participants to keep the race challenging, rewarding and boatloads of fun. Clean Lakes Alliance, our community partner, is also on board.
The race begins at James Madison Park with a 1.5-mile paddle on Lake Mendota, followed by a 1-mile portage over the central isthmus past the Capitol and Dane County Farmers' Market, before heading to the final 1.5-mile paddle across Lake Monona and the finish line at Olin Park, where racers and spectators are invited to enjoy music, food and the 2013 Paddle & Portage awards ceremony.
