This charity event benefits the Madison Symphony Orchestra's youth education programs. You get cocktails, a picnic dinner in an idyllic setting, and a concert of light classics featuring members of the MSO and conductor John DeMain. What's not to like?
Spoken Word & Hip-Hop Teacher's Institute

The institute on multicultural arts education has planned several events to engage the Madison public. There will be free forums such as "Hip-Hop vs. Tha New World Order" (June 18, 7 pm); "Gangstas, Wankstas, and Ridas: Effective Teachers in Urban Schools" (June 19, 7 pm); and "From Old School to New School," featuring rap pioneer Kool DJ Herc (June 22, 6:30 pm). There will also be a free concert with Kool DJ Herc, Clyde Stubblefield, Dumate and others (June 22, UW Memorial Union Terrace, 9 pm).

Linklater discusses his book The Fabric of America, an attempt to rescue the seminal American surveyor Andrew Ellicott from oblivion. Beginning in 1785, Ellicott created many of the borders that separate state from state, helping to create our national identity.

The MSO packs up its violins and violas and heads east for a free outdoor concert. You can bring a blanket and a picnic and watch the great John DeMain conduct a program of light classics by Grieg, Sibelius and Tchaikovsky, featuring Middleton High School's violin phenom Krista Stewart. The Madison Children's Museum will be on hand to sponsor activities for Tchaikovsky-averse tykes.
