"The delicious thought is percolating around Dane County that Bob Kastenmeier was too liberal for the 2nd District," Republican activist David Blaska opines in a gleeful election postmortem on the election that saw the longtime Democratic incumbent ousted by Republican Scott Klug. "If Dane County remains a liberal bastion, the fortress is under siege. The tenured radicals at the other end of State Street and the aging revolutionaries on Williamson Street may never vote GOP, but there is no reason suburban and rural Dane County and the far west and east sides of Madison - increasingly populated by young executives and well-educated professionals - cannot become...reliably Republican...." Klug wins reelection three times, in 1992, 1994, and 1996, before leaving Congress in 1998, when he is succeeded by Democrat Tammy Baldwin.
