Weston Place: Towering In Lonely Splendor Over a Now Vacant Lot
Today's image is titled Weston Place: Towering In Lonely Splendor Over a Now Vacant Lot and was photographed by Peter Patau.
Brilliantly blue skies and a gleaming sun illuminate an open pit on the west side of Madison that is one of the most visible symbols around the city of the changing economic climate amidst the deflation of the real estate bubble and ongoing credit crisis. This site at the intersection of University Avenue and Segoe Road, just to the west of Hilldale Mall, was to be the site of a new development that has at various times included plans for a Whole Foods Market, condos, and a boutique hotel, adjacent to the Weston Place luxury condos already erected atop University Hill.
"You might call this the scar left on the face of Madison by the real estate bubble and the credit crisis it spawned," declares Patau in a photo essay about the site, the future of which is now uncertain following the cancellation of the grocery store project. "Now it's a wasteland, although Mother Nature is alway resourceful, and it seems to be greening up nicely, at least at the edges."
