UW-Madison is designating the 2010-11 academic calendar its Year of the Arts. From September through next August, it aims to gather more than 300 exhibits, performances, symposia and other arts-related events and initiatives, putting a bright spotlight on the university's creative classes. The theme for this year-long observance: Illuminate.
If this doesn't sound out of line with the usual rate of artistic expression across the course of a typical academic year here, check out the high-wattage events announced so far.
On Sept. 16, Rocco Landesman -- Broadway impresario, , likewise a Badger alum, returns to his alma mater the weekend of Oct. 21-23 for a retrospective and discussion of his work, which includes The Thin Blue Line, A Brief History of Time and The Fog of War.
And next spring, no less a UW grad than the renowned chemist, playwright, poet and art patron Carl Djerassi returns to Madison in conjunction with a staged reading of his work.
