Today's image shows a weathered work of masonry in downtown Madison and was photographed by Stefanie Daun.
This photo shows a piece of history along the East Washington Avenue wall of Breese Stevens Field in the Tenney-Lapham neighborhood on the near east side. The stadium was built in 1926 as a multiuse athletic complex; the walls were added in 1934 as part of a New Deal-era Civil Works Administration project; hence the bas-relief marker sporting a bald eagle and the legend "CWA/1934."
Breese Stevens Field is currently in the midst of a major renovation, launched by the city in September. As noted by the parks department: "The repair and renovation work will include major concrete decking repair, replacing the storm sewer system for better field and bleacher drainage, and getting the building up to ADA code by adding accessible seating, an internal accessible entrance to the bleachers and a new accessible restroom." More information about this hidden downtown gem is available from Wikipedia, the Ballpark Reviews, and the Madison Trust for Historical Preservation.
