Mark your calendars... wait, don't have a calendar yet for next year? Before you shell out the big bucks for the 2008 Dunder Mifflin office calendar, consider some locally produced versions.
The Friends of the Pheasant Branch Conservancy has created the 2008 Phenology Calendar. Phenology is not the practice of discerning a person's character by feeling the bumps on his or her head -- that's phrenology. See, you learned something new already.
Phenology is the study of the timing of biological events over the course of a year, like the budding of the first leaves in spring or when birds migrate. The Pheasant Branch calendar is packed with natural info for the Madison area -- what to look for each month, from birds and blooms to bugs and butterflies. Photos of the Pheasant Branch conservation lands from local photographers are also featured monthly.
The cost is $10, which will go toward Pheasant Branch Conservancy/environmental activities. Calendars are available at area businesses (The Bruce Company, University Bookstore, the Wisconsin Historical Society Museum, the UW Arboretum Bookstore, REI, Prairie Cafe and Bakery and Wild Birds Unlimited). Order forms are also availale online (PDF).
The Northside Planning Council and the Northside News have put together a Northside History Calendar featuring images from the area's storied past, including the legendary Rocky Roost. Rocky Roost? It was a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed summer cottage on an island in Lake Mendota. That's right, it's not an urban legend; it's the truth. And there are photos. (The cottage burned, and later the island was covered by rising lake waters.) The calendar is available from the Lakeview Branch Library or the Northside Planning Council for $12; or call 661-0060.
