Today's image is titled Pagee Go Go at the Waterfront Festival and was photographed by Nataraj Hauser.
This photo shows the Madison-based samba band Pagee Go Go kicking off the live music at the Marquette Waterfront Festival on Saturday. The pleasant outdoors setting at Yahara Place Park on the north shore of Lake Monona was not to last for long, though. Severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings in the afternoon soon brought the lakeside fun to an end.
"It may have seemed like a humble slot to play, but the weather turned ugly in the middle of the afternoon, and it turns out that only PGG and one other act got to play," notes Hauser in a photo essay focusing on the musical entertainment at the festival. "While the crowd was light when they took the stage at the crack of noon, PGG pulled the crowd down to hear their fun, up-tempo samba sounds."
Tani Diakite and the Malian Blues Band were also able to play at the festival before the weather turned ugly. The three afternoon acts were canceled, though Nation Beat from Brooklyn was able to play a pair of indoor sets on Saturday. "As the night came to an end, Nation Beat came out in the crowd and continued to play, working the dancers for a final few minutes," concludes Hauser. "A great night of music at the Crystal Corner Bar salvaged what could have been a disappointing day."
Pistolera, Feufollet, and Paul Cebar and the Milwaukeeans, which were scheduled to play the festival on Sunday, were able to escape the ongoing deluge and also perform indoors at the Crystal. One other group that was rained out, The Vagabond Opera, is returning to town and will be playing an all ages show at the Wil-Mar Center starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11.
