Today's image is titled "Balloons and a salute" and was photographed by Kristian Knutsen.
Crowds were thick around the Capitol on Thursday night for the second Concerts on the Square of the 2008 summer season, despite the rescheduling of the show from its regular Wednesday slot due to threats of inclement weather. This change was appropriate, though, as this show on the eve of Independence Day was themed as a "Salute to America," with performances of "American Salute" by Morton Gould, Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18 III. Allegro scherzando by Sergei Rachmaninoff, a "Battle Hymn of the Republic" arrangement by Peter Wilhousky, and the annual favorite "1812 Overture" by Pyotr Tchiakovsky. The Stars and Stripes and other displays of red, white, and blue abounded at the concert, in buntings, apparel, and as seen in this photo, bunches of balloons.
