A tremendous crowd of picnickers and music-listeners turned out for Opera in the Park 2008, an annual outdoor summer show at Garner Park on the west side of Madison. Presented by the Madison Opera and featuring performances by the group's chorus as well as the Madison Symphony Orchestra and guest opera stars, the event has grown to blossomed to become a major mid-summer event in town, attracting a crowd of some 13,000 people on Saturday night.
"It was much more attended than I thought it would be," writes one person who attended the show and published a photo gallery capturing the sprawl of the audience. "Overall, it was the perfect day for laying in the park listening to some fantastic music." Several more images from the event can also be found in this by Martin Saunders.
"After a month of rehearsals and one very sweaty and buggy dress rehearsal, the performance night was fantastic," notes another person at Garner Park on Saturday, albeit on stage. "The 13,000 (and that isn't a typo) people in the crowd were treated to some fabulous soloists, some excellent opera repertoire and, of course, the fabulous Madison Opera Chorus. Aside from the singing, the best part of the night was getting a paycheck. I love to sing and will do so for free, but to actually be paid for doing what I love is so rewarding!"
