Monday 8.25

Lee "Scratch" Perry
Majestic Theatre, 8 pm
Lee "Scratch" Perry's work behind the mixing desk made him one of the most revered producers in reggae -- not to mention rock 'n' roll hipsters dub-master of choice. But that's just part of the picture. The man they call the Upsetter is also a sui generis performer who lives in an alternate universe of his own creation. Mind-blower of the week.

Beaten by Them
High Noon Saloon, 8:30 pm
Although nominally a rock band, Australia's Beaten by Them transcend classification with fearless guitar- and cello-driven sonic experiments that are by turns moody, majestic and chaotic. El Valiente open.

Tuesday 8.26

Jana Hunter
High Noon Saloon, 7 pm
The Texas-bred singer-songwriter and her band drift into town bearing a disc of droning, dream-like indie material that's meant to mesmerize. Indie-folk star Devendra Banhart is a major supporter and sometime collaborator. Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez open.

Wednesday 8.27

Chuchito Valdés
100 block of State Street, 5 pm
The Jazz at Five summer series continues with this Cuban piano great, son of Cuban piano great Chucho Valdés and grandson of Cuban piano great Bebo Valdés. Those family gatherings must be a gas.

Jsan & the Analogue Sons
High Noon Saloon, 9 pm
Despite their interest in dub, earnest, melodic Jsan & the Analogue Sons couldn't be more different from Lee Perry. Even so, the Ithacans put on a very credible reggae dance party. Roots Collective open.

Walls of Jericho
Annex, 9 pm
These Detroit-based metal-core enthusiasts boast a female lead singer who can bellow and growl with the best of 'em. That's more than enough to set the unrelenting metallurgists apart from other speed-addled outfits. 36 Crazy Fists, It Dies Today, Sea of Treachery and Flatline also appear.

Thursday 8.28

Joe & Vicki Price
Cafe Montmartre, 9:15 pm
Much like Wisconsin, Iowa doesn't have a direct connection to delta blues. Even so, this easygoing, trad-minded Iowa duo has a lot of success reanimating pre-war acoustic blues. Joe Price is especially adept at transmitting a back-country vibe with his steel-bodied guitar. Josh Harty opens.
