Re: If the Shoe Fits...

You gotta admit, the man's got reflexes! If you think dodging the shoe made him look weak and idiotic, how would you feel if he'd let himself get smacked in the face?
It sounds beautiful. But more importantly, no faaaaaiiiiirrrrrr.
Re: Greetings from warm and sunny St. Martin

A few reflection on our vacation so far... sugar birds like to fly low, saw mongoose a couple times, fantail palms everywhere ... fromage, Presidente cervaza, Guavaberry colandas... about a buck thirty for a Euro, although with the slowing worldwide economy some places will give you an even exchange... no sunburn yet, thanks to 30 SPF and a beach umbrella, just started my third beach book, yesterday we ran into someone we know from Wisconsin (small world, isn't it)... tonight we are having Italian at Spiga in Grand Case. Life is good.
This is why they make movies, and why Spielberg has seven houses.
Re: STUFF I SHOULD READ BUT STILL HAVEN'T

Dear world,
I haven't read The Kite Runner or Life of Pi yet. Get off my back. Love, Velour Casket
We'll miss her more than we miss Fuddruckers, and that's sayin' a lot.
MEREDITH YORK walks the State Street beat for the last time
by blunt on Sat Dec 13, 2008 11:43 am
Cops never listen. Cops don't smile. Cops aren't human. Cops never let you have any fun. You can't tip their cruisers over. No drunken outdoor peeing. Never grab their gun and dance away playfully. And god forbid you should rob a band or kill anybody.
But Meredith is different. She listens. She smiles. Always. Even when you're face down on the sidewalk and she's kneeling on your neck. She is very pleasant. (Just don't tip, grab, rob, or kill.) Meredith has been State Street's top cop for a thousand years. And on Jan 1 she's moving to Florida. She will be missed.
Sharp and smart

Re: Honor Zimmerman's parents' request?

What are these facts of which the public should be made aware of?
Call placed to 911 Center. Operator failed to take proper action or follow-up. What else does "the public" need to know? What exactly do people hope to learn from this tape? Because IMO, this smacks of morbid curiosity, not fact-finding.
Ding ding! Let the mudsling begin!
Re: Nancy Mistele ONE BIG CONFLICT OF INTEREST
by David Blaska on Tue Dec 16, 2008 6:59 pm
Nice try, guys. But it won't sell, because no one is that stupid. Presumably everything the County Board does benefits Dane County. (Would anyone associated with the county claim otherwise?) Under that prescription, NOBODY could serve!
A North Beltline benefits everyone north of Lake Mendota -- the butcher, the baker, and the candlestick maker. By your logic, they'd have to sell or put into a blind trust the meat market, the grocery store, and the yarn barn to serve as County Executive. What IS a conflict of interest is if Nancy Mistele sells Dane County the concrete or gets the surveying contract or sells the paint for the yellow stripe down the middle. To argue otherwise is to say only eunuchs, trolls, or discalced Carthusian monks can run for elective office.
It's called the Statement of Economic Interest. It asks questions like "Are you or any of your immediate family members an officer or member of any organization (including non-profit organizations), other than social, political, or religious groups, which has a contractual agreement with Dane County?"

The new Sequoya Library now rivals State Street Steep and Brew for coolest toilets.
Review of the new Sequoya library
by Ashley on Mon Dec 15, 2008 2:28 pm
I'm at the new Seqouya library and I thought I'd give y'all a heads up about what it's like. It seems like a lot of people are eager to go to the new branch because it's pretty busy even though it's midday. When you enter, there is an emphasis on self-checkout with a designated library staffer to help people with it, kind of like at the grocery store. The design has an emphasis on light woods and grey-green shades, and there are lots of tables for studying or reading but not many big comfy chairs at all. In this sense, it reminds me more of a university library than a public library. This is a good place if you wanna use your laptop--there are lots of places to plug in devices and free wireless Internet. Sadly, one of my favorite features at Central Library, Books Too Good to Miss is not present at this branch.
Another random cool thing--the bathrooms have two options for flushing--low flush for liquids and high flush for solids. I've never seen this in the US before.
mid-January thru April, this will be one of the few branches open on Sundays.
Given the recent plague, we just couldn't ignore our most popular thread.
Re: snow, snow and you guessed it...

Speaking from experience:
A frozen door is tricky because you don't know where the problem is. It can be around the edge of the door (where the rubber seal runs), or internally where the window rolls down inside and various levers move the lock mechanism, or just within the keyhole itself.
If it's inside the keyhole sometimes the hair dryer trick works. Occasionally heating up the key with a lighter will work too.
If it's around the edge of the door, if your door handle is strong (but we know yours isn't) and you know the lock mechanism is unlocked (the button is up) sometimes you can pull the door out far enough to get something in the crack and work it around the perimeter, freeing the ice that formed between the rubber thing and the metal door edge.
If the frozen place is the levers within the door, pretty much all you can do is have it towed somewhere warm, such as your mechanic's garage.
Incidentally the through-the-hatchback thing works more often than you'd suspect if you have a hatchback car. You didn't say you did though.
What would we be without a little music promo?
