Today's image is titled Birth of a Snowflake was photographed by Loren Zemlicka.
"This was the scene last Sunday morning in southern Wisconsin," writes Zemlicka about this photo recalling the weekend ice storm. "Freezing rain overnight left frozen rain drops on branches and turned our sidewalks into slidewalks. It's still rough walking around town as nothing has thawed. News reports this morning said over 175 people were admitted to area emergency rooms due to accidents caused by the slidewalks."
More details about the freezing rain are detailed in a report prepared by the Milwaukee/Sullivan office of the National Weather Service. "The worst icing conditions appeared to be north and northeast of Madison," notes meteorologist Marc Kavinsky. "Law enforcement reported several roll overs on Interstate 90-94 Saturday evening with numerous slide-offs on state highways. Sporadic accidents continued into Sunday morning due to the treacherous conditions produced by the lingering ice." The remainder of the report discusses the thermal profile of the atmosphere that produced the icy conditions.
