The Week: January 12-15, 2009

Winter break is coming to a close, as are the early January entertainment doldrums. Warm up this week with a book reading by Laura Schaefer, along with live music by The Whomping Willows with Justin Finch-Fletchley, Juice, Dangergrass, and Invade Rome.

Monday 1.12

Laura Schaefer
University Book Store-Hilldale, 7 pm
> The Madison author talks up The Teashop Girls, her new young-adult novel, about a 13-year-old girl who's striving to keep her grandma's tea shop open, all the while dealing with romantic yearnings. Cute.

Tuesday 1.13

The Whomping Willows, Justin Finch-Fletchley
University Book Store-Hilldale, 7 pm
The Harry Potter empire has spawned movies, thousands upon thousands of dollars' worth of merchandise, and the return of geeky glasses, not to mention something called "wizard rock." Finch-Fletchley and the Whomping Willows are the genre's budding superstars -- and they're likely to make a great story for the next morning's water-cooler chitchat.

Wednesday 1.14

High Noon Saloon, 9:30 pm
Chicago rapper Juice gained the public's attention when he topped Eminem at the Scribble Jam freestyle battle back in 1997, a feat so impressive that some naysayers have accused him of writing his rhymes rather than inventing them off the cuff. See how he does it by seeing him live -- otherwise you may never know for sure. With The Crest, Fall Guys, DJ Pain 1.

Thursday 1.15

Argus Bar & Grille, 9 pm
Stevens Point bluegrass outfit Dangergrass, juiced by the vocal riffage of Reverend Eddie Danger, visits town to release its new album, S.T.A.R.S.

Invade Rome
Frequency, 10 pm
Milwaukee cult favorite Invade Rome brings the goods -- in this case, psych-rock with an unusually large drum sound -- to town in support of its forthcoming album, Light Eyed & Villainous. Blueheels and Juniper Tar open.
