Elections and government were the topics of choice on the forum this week, but many forons found solace in twisted humor and buttery noodles.
Funny and absurd
It's funny, in a sad, sadistic kind of way.
Stimulus Oink-Oink
Post by Shovel Ready on Fri Feb 13, 2009 5:32 pm
This is just amazing....
1. $198 Million to Philipino WWII veterans, 2/3 do not live in the USA. 2. $650 Million for DTV boxes for those who will not buy there own converter. 3. $50 Million to the NEA (National Endowment of the Arts) 4. $70 Million for a Smoking Cessation Program to help people quit smoking. 5. $79 Billion to help bail out states that can not maintain their own budgets.
WOW! Are you fucking kidding me?
No trolley for Mayor Goofball yet but there is more oink-oink (a.k.a. Barney Frank) to come.
She's just sayin', but it aint sayin' much.

I have a gripe about the obits. It is hard to find archived information and the listing have no pictures. For God sake, the Rockford paper has a better website. Kittens, baby chicks and…8 year olds?

What a great game. Krabbenhoft's place among the greatest Badgers of all time is secure. Evan Turner from State was seemingly scoring at will for a while, I can't believe he didn't end up with more points. He would be even more dangerous if he had a team to play with. ESPN sure has the golden touch.
After the game, as we were in line, in the car, in the ramp, some college age guy was going up the line, getting all the people in line to high five him. When it was our turn, I tried to just put my hand on the window, but the superfan would have none of it, and instructed me with a vigorous roll-down-the-window motion. After we fived, he reached in and insisted my eight-year-old boy five him too. The look on my boy's face was priceless; a little fear, a little amazement, and a little excitement, rolled together. After the superfan moved on, my boy asked me what that was all about. I said, "That was one of the most memorable Badger games ever. That game changed people's lives." I was half-kidding when I said it, but he didn't know, and it was fun to hear him mull over the concept and repeat the phrase out loud. Good stuff.
I wasn't thinking Chai or Oolong either.

Doug's Soul Food Rocks!
Post by bassbari on Sun Feb 15, 2009 7:44 am
I remember someone on the Forum last fall asking about Doug's Soul Food. They opened last August and were struggling until this week. It got an excellent review in another paper, so my partner, who is a black and a sort of a soul food expert, and I decided to try it yesterday. It is off Fitch Hatch on Greenway Cross across from the HumVee/Cadillac dealership. It was very clean and cheery inside. The menu is very limited but that is okay. Choice of Barbeque pork spare ribs, catfish, perch, barbeque beef short ribs and southern fried chicken. All are $8.95 except the chicken which is $7.50. Not a bad price point for all the food I got. I had the catfish, which included one large fried catfish fillet, seasoned just right with cornmeal and spices. It came with a choice of 2 sides: Black eyed peas, collard greens, candied sweet potatoes, mac & cheese, sauteed veggies, cole slaw and French fries, along with a choice of corn bread, dinner roll or hush puppies.
I had the best mac and cheese ever! baked in a pan, creamy with real cheese butter, eggs and milk, I am guessing. Real home made, just like mom. The sauteed veggies (squash, zucchini, peppers, broccoli, tomatoes and onions) were fantastic as well, grilled and very healthy. I noticed the daily special was chittlins, but I took a pass. To real soul food experts, I guess it is an acquired taste. We had very good sweet potato pie and lemon cake, both home made. I was hoping for peach cobbler, but not on the menu. Oh Well. Check it out. We were waited on by the owners Doug and Janie Wemberly. Janie told me, because of the passing the word that Madison finally has a good soul food restaurant, that this was the first month they could actually make the rent. Please check it out. You won't be disappointed. I would hate to see them fail.
Harrissimo cuts the shit. Fact.
Re: 911 Center operating at a high level of effectiveness

The fact is that a 911 operator screwed up. The fact is that Falk, the County Board, and others did a miserable job in responding to the 911 operator screw up. The fact is that an independent audit says the 911Call Center is operating at a high level of effectiveness and efficiency although there is room for improvements, The fact is that Mistele and other extreme right wing whack jobs have shamefully exploited this murder for political purposes. These are facts. Another fact is that I'm voting for Falk.
This is not a fact but a hunch: Falk will defeat Mistele.

Jesus. The context: Supreme Court race. The issue: hypocritical campaign messages. I put it to you: look at Ziegler/Clifford, Gableman/Butler, Koshnick/Abrahamson. I see hypocrisy in the challenger's messages to voters when you compare the current race to the last. If there have been hypocritical messages on the part of the so-called "liberal" candidates between any of these three races, call it out! I'll acknowledge it, I swear. But I don't think you'll be able to, and it won't just be because you obviously weren't paying attention. We know who the conservatives are in these races; we know who the liberals are. The question is: Is it hypocritical for the last conservative candidate to decry the liberal's defense attorney experience and now the next conservative candidate has that same experience but that's suddenly OK with conservatives and WMC alike? The answer, of course, is yes. I keep expecting more out of these Supreme Court races, but I guess that's just me.
The wrath of a single issue voter without recourse.

You need to seriously get off your partisan horse. There are plenty of lefties upset about ALL corporate politicians that got us into this mess and we want them ALL out on their ear's. Just because people lean to the left and perfer to help their neighbor does not mean we are equally willing to look the other way if a Democrat is screwing us. Clinton screwed us plenty with NAFTA, War on Drugs, and deregulation. GWB, Reagan, and Bush I just did it much faster, harder, and so much more effectively. And the one single thing that could help save the economy - universal health care, they (current politicians with any real power) all seem to be doing a good job of ignoring.
Re: NY Post compares Obama to "euthanized" chimp

Thinking about this some more, I could almost see the cartoonist in a frame of mind where he was struggling to link the stimulus bill to the recent chimp attack in a misguided attempt at being witty and topical. Maybe he didn't consider Obama as the bill's author, and never considered the race angle.
Maybe. But boy, that's tortured.
At the very least, there had to be an editor or two that would realize the implications of what was pictured. So either they're blatantly racist, or they're blatantly stupid. Of course, we're talking about the Post here, so maybe both.
