Forons were jaded as ever this week, cuttin' down everything from Nancy Pelosi to a new east side café. Despite the cutting cynicism, though, a few were able to find the simple pleasures of hotel soap and super-size spuds.

Too twee. The name of a business should not be as precious as the products it sells. It'd be like calling a shop that sells collectible figurines a "figurineiary" and pretending like that's acceptable. It's not.
But isn't voting our civic duty?

Ah, The Cacophony of Daybreak

Well, it's almost time to leave my window open overnight and I did last night (just a crack) only to be greeted with screeching and howling at about 4am. God bless the eight pine trees in my backyard, as they have provided sustenance to all of nature's most unbearable noisemakers. I appear to have attracted a robin that's about the size of a pigeon and can be heard two blocks away. The Luciano Pavarotti of warblers, if you will. Fat, incredibly loud and so persistent you wonder if it will ever stop to eat. A window fan is no match for this beast.
Sticks and stones can break his bones, and words are quite cathartic.
Ask me if I give a FUCK, Mr. Cheney

Dear Dick,
It boggles the mind that the GOP powers-that-be would allow you to assume the mantle of party spokesthing, but it's illuminating that they'd pick the guy who routinely trailed the tapeworm in public opinion polling. I guess Republicans really are as fucking stupid as I've often mused. Way to bolster the ranks, you impotent freaks.
Keep harping on the Gitmo thing. Tell us again how Obama is making us less safe. It means a lot coming from the guy on whose watch the greatest number of Americans in history perished at the hands of terrorists because he couldn't sound out the big words on the daily briefing memo. I guess in GOP Bizarro World, such incompetence makes you an authority on national security. Likewise, my burning the pizza last night makes me a five-star chef.
Good luck on your continued torture tour. Every utterance from your blood-lusty maw puts you closer to the clink, you blind, murderous, Marquis de Sade wannabe.
I hope this whole experience has your blood pressure through the fucking roof. The day your heart explodes, there will be dancing in the streets the world over. Given your overwhelming popularity, that day is sure to be declared a federal holiday and we could all stand an extra day off work. So thanks in advance for that.
Sincerely,
Chuck

Re: how low will assessments go?
Post by narcoleptish Sat May 16, 2009 9:02 am
Just a thought.
If you were to buy a cheap fixer-upper, depending on what the current assessment is you might not want to try and get it lowered. I bought a foreclosure for 30G less than assessment. The assessment is actually very reasonable. Everyone said I should try to get it lowered to the purchase price so I went and filed a protest. While up there I was told by an assessor that if it was lowered, they would want to come out the next year to re-assess it. Not what I wanted to hear, so I canceled the protest and now I hope to hang on to my very reasonable assessment for awhile longer.
"And then I'll block you on G-chat!".

While Thuy Pham-Remmele and Brenda Konkel are on opposite political extremes they do share an important trait; they are both political exhibitionists. This probably more than anything else contributed to the end of Konkel's run as an elected official. Brenda's threat to defriend reporters on Facebook is almost as laughable as Thuy's threat to resign. But both faint threats are byproducts of their shared small town pol megalomania.

With each passing day, I'm becoming convinced this whole CIA leak on Pelosi has been staged to fake out the Republicans in congress. If it was Obama calling for opening the records the GOPers would be screaming the he is on a partisan witch-hunt, but getting the GOPers to start screaming to open the records is freaking golden.
Re: donate your hotel soap collection!
Post by robbie webber Tue May 19, 2009 4:36 pm
Two conflicting impulses fight it out when I check into a hotel and see the little soaps and shampoos:
1. Take them and donate them to the women's shelter, which I've done in the past. (Community services supporter side)
2. Leave them so I don't contribute to more little tiny plastic bottles being manufactured and then thrown away. (Enviromentalist side.)
So I take the extra soap and leave the shampoo.
And just a little pitch for buying just a couple extra items next time you are shopping and giving them to your local shelter, food pantry, or other community organization. A couple boxes/cans of what's on sale, some tooth brushes, soap, deodorant, a bag of rice, or even extra produce from your garden can go a long way to helping out others in your community. If we all gave one or two items each from a shopping trip, the food pantries would be full!
As if swine flu weren't enough, thanks for this.

After yesterday's shutdown of the Hoyt Park area, I started thinking about the first fire or medical emergency on campus resulting in serious injuries or death, and how there will be no way to get in there to save people.
Or the first overheated car/ multi-car accident on Campus Drive, and how bad traffic will be then....
At least when the Pharmacy Building fell down, the hospital was right across the street for Steven Weber to get saved, only to have him take his own life a few years later after killing his ex-wife.
Some lawyer(s) will make a bunch of $$ on one of these, I bet.
We went through Shorewood Hills via Eagle Heights yesterday, and so far, traffic is light. Most drivers have trouble coming up with an alternate plan. Cab-driving DID teach me a lot of different ways to get from Point A to Point B.
