Sonia Sotomayor
Forons focused on both local and national goings-on this week. From Brat Fest to Bicycle Benefits to bench nominations, there was no stone unturned and no topic unscathed.
Funny and absurd
Lemme guess -- you're gonna need me to come in on Saaaturday?
Re: Intelligence Reports Cover Sheets

"Um... yeah... we're putting the cover sheets with the fucked-up Bible quotes on all of the intelligence briefings now before they go out. Ah, did you see the memo about this?
"So, yeah... if you could just go ahead and make sure you put that cover sheet on from now on, that'd be terrific. Oh, and I'll go ahead and make sure you get another copy of that memo. Mmkay?"
University Ave. may be only one lane, but at least the kids have skedaddled.

I live downtown and really don't mind window shopping the fresh crop of taut young fleshbuckets that swarm into town every year like a plague of dumb attractive locusts. But once they've gained 15 pounds and are temporarily exterminated, there are some nice changes:
> No cute butts in my way, mostly just regular ones.
> No mobs of oblivious herds of baby giraffes in highheels and awkward monkeys just...standing!...in the middle of the sidewalk.
> No empty bad beer cans and bottles peppering my neighborhood each morning like petrified mutant woodland animals or industrial porch decorations like really lame windchimes and grounded aluminum wind socks.
> No one in front of me at the bar asking "Um...what do you have that's good?"
> No one yelling "woo".
And I thought Kung Pao Chicken was the same the world over.

Indian doctors named Gupta are part of the same law that requires government building cafeterias to be run by a blind person, college alumni over 40 to still carry large combs-with-a-handle in their back pockets, and Chinese menus to have the exact same tiny photos of food.
Double whammy if we toss in swine flu.

I'm a little disappointed that Obama didn't spend the extra time searching for someone who would really piss off the goopers. Hispanic is ok, but she ain't Mexican and nothing gets a redneck's dander up like a Mexican. Perhaps rather than calling her a Puerto Rican American we should refer to her as the "chick that speaks Mexican." Oh yeah.

I really feel for Newt on this one. It must have been awful growing up as he did, forced to drink from the "whites only" water fountain, made to sit at the front of the bus, constantly faced with the dilemma of whether to dine in a booth or at the counter, and always with the knowledge that the angry black mob could show up at your door at any time to drag you and your loved ones to be hanged from the nearest tree without any semblance of due process.
Talk about putting the "twit" in Twitter.
I'm so tired of these fat, old, privileged white fuckers crying "Racist!" I could shit a life-sized bust of Lincoln. Jam a cork in it, crackerjack. Don't you have a dying wife somewhere you should be serving with divorce papers about now, Mr. Sensitive?
Newt should have landed in the clink where he could have come to appreciate the true meaning of being in the minority.
Smart and sharp
Saving gas and racking up discount lattes? Hell yeah.
Bicycle Benefits Program
Post by bigdumbgirl Fri May 22, 2009 8:31 am
There's a program called Bicycle Benefits at Community Pharmacy so I bought a little sticker for $5 to put on my bicycle helmet and now I get a 10% discount there when I bike downtown and show them my helmet. Apparently there are other business that offer discounts to BB members, so I want to make a list. Anyone know any other places in Madison that offer Bicycle Benefits?
There's always a dull gray lining.

My wife, three daughters, daughter's b-friend & wheelchair bound mother in law went yesterday and ate about 20. Pretty crowded, but that's to be expected. I don't see any cause to complain about parking, but if I go again this weekend, it'll be by bike.
NOW my Bratfest beef, which may put me in a minority of one. Not being a fan of super loud rock & country music, I find it really difficult to relax and enjoy brats & conversation. I'm sure this will fall on deaf ears, but how about ONE stage, so there could be a space on the grounds that's at least relatively quiet?
Now go ahead and let me know what a stick in the mud I am
And the "dumb-down" process continues...

I'm still having a hard time understanding the continued appeal of reality TV. They can't even make the "Local Couple, along with an effeminate designer, renovate their neighbor's laundry room" shows on HG interesting without scripting pretty much everything.
I did see 3-4 episodes of this show - the early ones where they showed them just getting through the day seemed a lot more fun to watch than "Mommy and the three boys go on Oprah" etc. that they did later.
I think this is how dictatorships begin.

There is something strange about the human condition (especially predominate, it seems, in the US) which, when an individual either does not like or approve of a certain activity or behavior, it is not enough that he/she herself not participate in it. They feel this intense motivation to make sure that NOBODY ELSE participates in it either.
