Forons were all about their city this week, chatting about everything from Madison gun carry laws to Overture Center billings. Some of us were angry, while others found humor in Salisbury steak warfare and rogue religious figures.
Funny and absurd

Re: Gingrich Calls Sotomayor a Racist

How disappointing.
Here I was, waiting to hear from Cuban American Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) just what sort of racism he'd been up to that would qualify him for the award he accepted from La Raza earlier this year.
Also looking forward to hearing from Alberto Gonzales about which of his racist beliefs earned him an endorsement for La Raza for his AG nomination.
And, of course, hearing from Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) about his keynote address to La Raza last year, presumably about how he supported their "racist" mission. (Any word whether he delivered the speech in English or in "Illegal Alien", as Liddy so charmingly put it?)
Maybe now that we're learning that La Raza isn't a racist organization at all, they'll say something instead to condemn the slander coming from their fellow GOP'ers.
Looking forward to hearing from them.
Any time now.

This is Madison - I think touring performers have standing ovations written into their contracts when they come here.
But when it's all over, they'll be up shit creek.

Hey, college is hard. They're under, like, so much, you know, pressure. How are they supposed to, like, get nutrition and stuff. It's not easy to cram partying, hanging out, shopping, having your laundry done for you by Lazybones, getting a new fake ID, going out to eat, being bored while Daddy pays for everything on top of going to class (maybe) four days a week. Gawd, this place is just ludicrous!!! Have a little heart, please?
Although writing them tickets for squatting down on the sidewalk on State Street and urinating is quite entertaining.
I miss them already.Last I checked, we were all trying to cut corners.

American tuna: $4.99 a 6 oz. can. Just sayin'.
High school lunchmeat does make wonderful ammo.

If school officials don't want students fighting with the cafeteria food, perhaps they shouldn't make it lethal to begin with.
I mean, these are the people who invented "seven layer salad" in order to foist a euphemistic week's worth of leftovers on a rightfully suspicious student populace. The fuckers are lucky not to be serving an indefinite sentence at Gitmo.

Re: The Internet and New Socialism

No. of course the internet won't control the means of production. But of course Marx never foresaw anything like the internet. I wonder what he would do with it? You can organize and get ideas out easily. Not making posters at Kinkos - or better - a Union shop - but sending messages to friends and others. Imagine what Karl Marx's Facebook would look like. :)
Look at what MoveOn has done - getting people to organize against the Bush administration. A lot of young people send messages with computers, cell phones, etc. It's controlling information, not so much means of production. And with jobs disappearing the way they are, it's getting harder to control anything to do with production.
But there are governments that have shut down the internet because they fear it - Iran has shut down Facebook because Ahmadinejad's opponent was using it to communicate. China shuts down the internet - like after the Tibetan uprising - they shut down all sites having any information from Tibetans and sent out their own version of what happened.
I think the problem with the internet and the wikis is that it's sometimes hard to know what's real or not. People can flood it with misinformation as well as real information. But I guess the point of that article is that everyone who uses it has some say in what's out there, as long as it's still free.
Any excuse to say "money shot"...

Money-shot of a PR job there, Morlino. Seriously, in the middle of the most serious economic crisis since the Great Depression you close up a soup kitchen in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Madison while sitting on a huge insurance payout for a new cathedral that is never going to be built.
Very "Mother Teresa" like.

This film is a very stylish, low budget, mind fuck. It gave both my friend and I nightmares after viewing - not the type of dreams where you're being chased or something's out to get you - rather, the ones where you wake up repeatedly, feeling agitated, frustrated, and afraid but you just have no idea what in the world you were dreaming about.
Without giving too much of the story away, the time travel depicted in the film covers less than 24 period...is filled with mystery, supspense, and a distinct feeling of inevitable tragedy. This is a Spanish film with English subtitles. As was mentioned in the "Let the Right One In" thread, I suggest anyone interested in this movie watch it with the original Spanish using subtitles rather than watching the dubbed version.
Definitely a movie for those who are fans of Twilight Zone or perhaps Memento. This is the type of movie that Sundance 608 should have been playing, although I'm fairly certain they did not.

There are no jobs, or not many.
When I went to the Farmer's Market on Saturday there was a guy on State St. dressed in a red t-shirt and red pants and with his face and arms painter red, who was doing the "Robot." He had a sign that said "I need to raise $750 for UW tuition" posted above a box. He was okay, as far as performances go. My daughter thought he should have been silver instead of red. But most people didn't seem to notice him. I suppose by the end of the summer maybe he'll have the money.
Some people I know have kids who have been playing their instruments during the Farmers Markets since they were in grade school. The parents keep an eye on them of course - or did when they were little. They do it to raise money for college.
He may have a point, but this seems a little presumptuous to me.

Having a BB pistol in the front of your pants is not open carry.
Having a real pistol in the front of your pants is not open carry.
Reaching for either can get you shot. Drawing either will get you shot.
This not when you grew up. I don't want to shoot someone but I will if I have to.
Leave the airsoft/BB guns out on the farm or at the cottage or whatever and out of your pants.
Open Carry will get all kinds of people freaked out in this town and garner some police attention from all the 911 calls about the person with a gun. Proceed at your discretion.
I don't care if Wisconsin does pass CCW legislation because I assume you all have guns. Whether or not I can see it is irrelevent.
