Dianne has a consistent record of representing progressive values," said Soglin. "As a resident of district 77, I know Dianne will look out for our best interests on every issue in state government. I will vote for Dianne on September 14."
Now this right here is a good endorsement. No, you're not going to get the sitting mayor's endorsement he doesn't want to deal with fallout from the hurt feelings. However, Soglin, who ran against Cieslewicz in 2003, generally backs Mayor Dave on most issues, and has supported him during certain crucial battles, such as the District 2 aldermanic race last year, in which Cieslewicz, Soglin and former Mayor Sensenbrenner all backed Bridget Maniaci over Brenda Konkel. The picture of Maniaci with all three men was telling of the informal alliance they had struck.
Word on the street is Hesselbein and Hulsey are running neck-and-neck according to polls both camps have run. How do you poll an Assembly primary race? It's certainly not fool-proof, but you give your voter list to a polling agency and they call them. Out of a projected turnout of 6000 to 8000, I have no idea what the response rate is.
What I have heard, however, is that an enormous percentage of the respondents are undecided as much as 50 percent. And the other candidates beside the two H's are making a larger impact than expected, but none of them are realistic winners.
How much does Soglin's endorsement count? It should mean more to old-timers, but then again, many of the activists of yore have cooled to Soglin he no longer is a radical by any stretch of the imagination. But while those moderate tendencies have lost him some friends, they have likely gained him others, including many friends of Mayor Dave.
