Breaking: Senate extends deadline for governor's budget message; adjourns
on (2) Comments

The Senate's business for the day is over, as Republicans, in less than a minute, called the roll, passed a resolution to extend the deadline for the governor's budget message, and adjourned.

Capitol reporters were left befuddled as they rushed to ask senators what had just happened. Sen. Alberta Darling assured them that the Senate was adjourned for the day, and said some senators would stay at the Capitol, while others would go home.

Earlier Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald called again for Democrats to return to Madison, and expressed frustration with Democratic leaders for not contacting him, and said their actions were coming at the expense of public safety.

"The level of security is a big concern for us," he said.

In a separate interview, Sen. Glenn Grothman once again said he supported stripping law enforcement and firefighters of the collective bargaining rights that Walker has proposed for other state workers, but he pointed to the protests at the Capitol as evidence that the state cannot risk alienating the police right now.

"We need all the police protection we can get right now," he said. "Some of these protestors have been really nasty."
