I've always been a big fan of Amy's Cafe, on West Gilman Street. The margarita deals and the chill music were always a good match on a lazy summer afternoon or evening. The Mediterranean food, from gyros to pasta salad and chicken wraps, was good too.
Amy's was recently bought by the people who run The Argus. They spent several weeks renovating the bar and the result has some pros and cons. The bad news is the margarita specials are gone. The good news is there seems to be a radical increase in beer offerings, including a number of local and imported labels.
And there are still good drink specials. $2 Schlitz tall boys on Wednesday, for instance. $6 PBR pitchers on Tuesday isn't bad either.
Warning to underagers: The new Amy's appears to have a strict carding policy. The bouncer grilled my New Jersey driver's license and even asked for a second ID -- a humbling demand I haven't been subjected to since my fake ID days. Of course, I enjoyed it. I wish drinking were illegal again. It was much more fun that way.
