Citizen Dave: Don't move to Canada yet
on (1) Comment

A couple of month ago, I gave a speech near Toronto. I said that had Sarah Palin won the vice presidency in 2008, we had secret contingency plans to move the entire city of Madison to Ontario.

The line got laughs, but I'm sure there's more than one Madisonian thinking seriously along the same lines today.

But sorting through the wreckage of last night's defeat, you have to realize that as bad as things are, you don't like hockey and committee work enough to move north.

I have some experience with losing elections. It's crummy. It feels like somebody died. There's a period of something very like mourning that you just have to go through.

But eventually you figure out that nobody did die. That life goes on and you love your home, and you want to be a part of your community, and so, eventually, you reengage.

Madison is a successful community -- it demonstrates that decades of progressive policies work.

So, let's take some time. Let our wounds heal. Take heart in our own community, and when we're ready, see what can be done about moving the state back toward its progressive path.
