Summer officially arrives this week and the sun is blazing over Madison. The calendar includes: the Ultimate Cocktails competition; a book reading by M. Shawn Crahan; the Clips of Faith film fest; and, live music from Prairie Empire, Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, Brother, Intelescope and Team Bayside High, and The People's Temple.

Singer Brittain Ashford's Joni Mitchell-style vocals mesh wonderfully with her band's '60s-style folk harmonies and melancholy string arrangements. With the Tiny Band.

Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers
High Noon Saloon, 8 pm
Clyne and company don't mix their rock 'n' roll with funk or rap or synthy dance jams. They like it straight up, with four-part harmonies and insistent guitars. Drink in their latest album, 2011's Unida Cantina, at this show. With Gabriel Kelly.

Ultimate Cocktails
Madison Club, 6 pm
Isthmus and the foodie boutique Vom Fass present this competitive drink-mixing event, at which bartenders from hotspots like Maduro, Merchant and L'Etoile face off in the quest to produce Madison's Favorite Cocktail.

Monona Terrace Rooftop, 7 pm
Pack a picnic and hit the rooftop for a free show and a stellar view of Lake Monona. Brother melds melodies from Down Under with those from the Emerald Isle to summon dance moves from around the world.

Barnes & Noble-West Towne, 7 pm
The Slipknot percussionist, sometimes known as Clown, signs his new photo book, The Apocalyptic Nightmare Journey. Anything signed by Clown is a treasure forever.

Clips of Faith
Olin Park, 7:30 pm
Lounge around outside, watch short films and drink beer at New Belgium Brewing's touring event.

Intelescope, Team Bayside High
Majestic Theatre, 9 pm
The rave-inspired rockers Intelescope get the crowd dancing at the Majestic's Summer Nights weekly. Then the DJs of Team Bayside High unleash a hot and heavy set of moombahton.

The People's Temple
Terrace at UW Memorial Union, 9:30 pm
Influenced by artists like Arthur Lee, Spacemen 3, Link Wray and Joy Division, these Michiganders explore distortion and feedback with a sensibility that reflects punk and psych-rock simultaneously. With Pale Girls and Psychic Twin.
