Mary Kolar to run for Scott McDonell's seat on the Dane County Board

Although open downtown seats are rare for both the Dane County Board and Madison Common Council, the seat being vacated by county Supv. Scott McDonell so far has just one official candidate.

Mary Kolar, a retired U.S. Navy officer and director of Public Operations at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, officially announced her candidacy this week. McDonell endorses her.

"I will work to ensure our community continues to have vibrant urban centers and productive rural areas," Kolar says in a release. "I will work with fellow supervisors and County Executive Joe Parisi to improve the water quality of our lakes, the efficiency of our transportation systems and the level of human services the county provides."

Others were toying with running for the office, but appear to have dropped out.

McDonell was just elected county clerk, a position he'll start on Jan. 7. He says he expects to resign his seat on Dec. 28, in order to give the county board enough time to call a special election to coincide with the regular spring election.
