Naomi Davis is founder and president of Blacks in Green, a leader in green economic development for communities of color.
Naomi Davis, celebrated environmentalist and activist, joins Isthmus Green Day as a keynote speaker this year. The seventh annual expo will be held on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Monona Terrace. Admission is free to the public courtesy of MG&E.
Davis is a Chicago-based urban theorist and the author of The 12 Propositions of Grannynomics. Davis is also the founder and president of Blacks in Green, a leader in green economic development for communities of color.
Blacks in Green is a national green-village-builder with a goal to promote green community economic development across 13 economic sectors. The organization promotes local living strategies such as walk-to-work, walk-to-shop, walk-to-learn, and walk-to-play villages. The program aims to change popular perspective and view "Chicago as a city of villages" and neighbor-owned businesses. The program's system is designed to increase the rate at which neighbor-owned businesses are created and sustained by circulating its wealth to "invent, invest, manufacture, and merchandise locally." Its success can then be measured by the increase in household income of residents within the village community.
Davis' books, The 12 Propositions of Grannynomics and The 8 Principles of Green-Village-Building, reinforce the ideologies of Blacks in Green that support communities living and working together to take advantage of available opportunities by focusing on the environment and sustainability. Other key principles include fostering environmental education to continue growing in future generations, and celebrating a village's "past, present, and future culture through stories in print, digital, and theatrical forms."
Isthmus is pleased to welcome Naomi Davis to our main stage as a keynote speaker. A popular community event now in its seventh year, Isthmus Green Day is an environmentally friendly, sustainable living expo and forum that celebrates conscious living through informative exhibits, product demonstrations, educational activities, fascinating speakers, shopping opportunities, and more.
