Shalini Kantayya, a filmmaker and eco-activist, joins Isthmus Green Day as a keynote speaker this year. The seventh annual expo will be held on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Monona Terrace. Admission is free to the public courtesy of MG&E.
Kantayya is a Brooklyn-based filmmaker whose works are used to educate and inspire audiences around the world. She has directed several films to date, including Bombay Longing, A Drop of Life and Chasing the Sun, a documentary centered on building a clean energy economy in the United States. Her first commercial Hollywood release, A Drop of Life, explored the fight for water rights and the water crisis impacting millions of people around the world.
Kantayya's production company, 7th Empire Media, works to "create a culture of human rights and a sustainable planet through an imaginative media that makes a real impact." Her films have received recognition from the Sundance Documentary Program, Independent Filmmakers Project Spotlight on Documentaries, New York Women in Film and Television, and the Jerome Hill Centennial. She has lectured at Stanford, Harvard, Yale and the University of Southern California, and is a Sundance Fellow, a TED Fellow and an IATP Food and Society Policy Fellow.
