Compared to the Friday night State Street Halloween party in 2005, last night was relatively calm. There were only 68 arrests compared to some 125 in 2005, for starters. The police also implemented their downtown traffic plan much later this year to, barring traffic from crossing State Street around midnight rather than earlier in the evening. Besides the stadium lights and the soothing Big Brother voice coming from the police street-long speaker system, the most remarked-upon element of law enforcement on Friday was the mounted officers. Both their tactic of riding in lines along State Street, and their horses' droppings were effective in keeping people on the sidewalks.
