Crowd sizes were down at Freakfest on State Street, the brand applied to this year's Halloween revelry on the Saturday night before Halloween. Reaching close to six figures in recent years, the peak crowd size last weekend reached somewhere between 30 and 40,000 per police estimates. Numerous explanations of this change have been given, most focusing upon the changing reputation of the event and the city's more aggressive plans to contain and end the party early. In the end, the character of the event continues to change as it has every year, with the possibilities for the 2007 edition remaining wide open.
Working in collaboration with The Daily Page, The Daily Cardinal photographer Christopher Guess captured pictures of the crowds up and down State Street on Saturday night and early Sunday morning. A photo gallery focusing on revelry as seen from afar is available at right.
