This year's World's Largest Brat Fest is set to begin in less than three days. Running through all four days of the upcoming Memorial Day weekend at Willow Island by the Alliant Energy Center, the goal once again is to break the record of 189,432 sausages consumed that was set over Memorial Day weekend in 2004. The new wrinkle this year, aside from the perennial kvetching over the official status of veggie brats, is that the price per wurst is being raised from a buck to $1.50.
Preparations for the weekend are well under way, as seen in this photo of the "Johnsonville Big Taste Grill" making its way into Madison. As described by the organizers of Brat Fest, the mobile grill weighs 53,000 lbs, is 65 feet long and six feet wide, and can cook 750 brats at a time, or 2,500 per hour. Given that there are only 34 total hours in the event, this makes for a total of 85,000 brats, far short of the goal; but fear not -- the shortfall will be made up by a plethora of other grills.
