Koi Pond
Credit:Dave Esmond

Today's image is titled Koi Pond and was photographed by Dave Esmond.

This photo features a pair of koi swimming near the surface of a pond in the Allen Centennial Gardens. Located on the west end of the UW-Madison campus a block south of Lake Mendota, the 2.5-acre gardens, dedicated in October 1989, are used as an outdoor horticulture and landscaping classroom. As described in its official history:

Allen Centennial Gardens is constantly evolving. Visitors assume that it is a much older garden than it actually is and marvel at how established and complete it looks after only slightly more than a decade. The varied topography and exposures of the 90,000-square-foot site allow for a great diversity of plantings, and the "hardscapes" suggest a much older age. The major emphasis in the Gardens is on herbaceous ornamental perennials, but the site features many other plantings including annuals and woody plants.

The southwest corner of Allen Centennial includes a water garden that is home to koi. Seven years' worth of virtual tours of the entire gardens -- from 1999 through 2005 -- can be viewed here.
