Beer Here: Shaggin' in the Wood Bourbon Barrel-Aged Scotch Ale from Tyranena Brewing

Beer and bourbon can take the chill off a cold night this time of year. When both come in the same glass, as with bourbon barrel-aged beers, the combination can be relaxing, if not hypnotic, helping you forget the stress of a long day. The trick is finding a nice balance between each. When you do find it, you have something special. Tyranena Brewing has figured out this formula with its Shaggin' in the Wood Scotch Ale. >More
Beer Here: Fiddler Oatmeal Stout from Potosi Brewing

Here's a romance tip for the beer drinker just in time for Valentine's Day. Try pairing a dark beer rich with chocolate and caramel malts alongside an assortment of treats from your favorite chocolatier, and conduct a little pairing comparison. At the Isthmus Beer & Cheese Fest a couple of weeks back, Fiddler Oatmeal Stout from Potosi Brewing struck me as a beer well suited for such a passionate match of flavors. >More
Beer Here: Smoked Rye Ale from New Glarus Brewing

Just in case you've been wondering what New Glarus brewmaster Dan Carey might be up to for 2011, he's started the year with a new special release. This one, made in the tradition of a German Rauchbier, has quickly become one of my New Glarus favorites. If you too enjoy malty beers with hints of smokiness, put Smoked Rye on your list to pick up soon. >More

Delicious, raucous, simple fun at the 2011 Isthmus Beer & Cheese Fest

It's going on 2:30 p.m. when I hear the first rumble. It emanates from the opposite corner of the room, starting as a low moan and growing until everyone is shouting something -- I just can't tell what. I turn to my buddy Kevin to ask him what's going on, but midway through my sentence I'm interrupted by the sound of breaking glass. >More
Beer Here: Freestyle 2011 from Vintage Brewing

Vintage Brewing turned one year old this month, but brewmaster Scott Manning has already created a few traditions that help this west side brewpub live up to its name. Manning just released a beer that he says will become part of his annual ritual at the start of a new year. In December, he assesses what ingredients that remain from the previous brew year, and uses them to improvise a recipe he calls "Freestyle." >More
Beer Here: Night Train from O'so Brewing

I'm a beer enthusiast who is naturally drawn to brews with deep color and rich chocolate maltiness. Perhaps that's why there always seems to be a Wisconsin-made porter somewhere in my refrigerator. What I've been enjoying lately is Night Train from O'so Brewing. It's appropriately named because it's as black as the coal that once fueled locomotives all across the country. >More
Beer Here: Parallel Universe IPA from the Great Dane Downtown

The new year is off to a great start for hoppy beer fans. Eric Brusewitz, brewer at the Great Dane in downtown Madison, just tapped a coal-black beer with the aggressive bitterness of an India Pale Ale. The phrase made famous by test pilots and astronauts, "pushing the envelope," that is going beyond what their vehicle was designed to do, applies to Brusewitz's creation -- and it's appropriately called "Parallel Universe." >More
