Ale Asylum's tasting room crafts a satisfying brewery meal

In describing to friends how the new Ale Asylum tasting room on Pankratz Street is already flourishing, I joked that it's come a long way from the house-frozen pizzas of its former location on Anderson Street. (House-frozen, oddly enough, has yet to become a foodie totem like house-cured or house-smoked.) >More
Mildred's Sandwich Shop ends an era

Fans of Mildred's Sandwich Shop, you have two weeks in which to eat a last Leadbetter or Blystone. The venerable holdover from Madison's veritable hippie years has been sold, and the new owners plan to open a new restaurant at the site, according to its Facebook page. >More

Amy Verhey grew up in a small town outside of San Francisco. She's currently a senior at UW-Madison, and involved in the food scene in more than a casual way. Donna O'Donnell confides that she never brings her lunch to work: "I love lunching out and being social," she writes. Despite that, O'Donnell is also adamant about this fact: "I am not a foodie." However O'Donnell is a dedicated vegetarian (though she won't touch mushrooms). She also participates actively in several local fundraisers. She'll be "Freezin' for a reason" at the upcoming Special Olympics Wisconsin Polar Plunge as well as participate in next August's MS 150 Best Dam Bike Ride. >More
Pizza poetry: Neapolitan, schmeapolitan -- S2pizzabar serves great pies

S2pizzabar is the new venture from Ian Gurfield, of Ian's fame. Rather than open another outlet devoted to his thin-crust, unexpected-topping-combo pies, he wanted to go the wood-fired-oven route. It's not intended to be pure Neopolitan pizza. >More
