Sometimes Patchwork leader Jeremiah Nelson sounds so much like Madison expat Carl Johns it's unnerving. His high, reedy voice bleeds sweetness, and you wonder whether it might wear out its welcome on more urgent material. However, it's the ideal instrument for "Spaceships," a bittersweet slice of back-porch folk-rock that also plays footsie with '60s psychedelia in a dreamy coda. >More
 MadTracks -- 'The Takeover' by Lucha Libre

Madison-born up-and-comers Lucha Libre serve up a furious mix of both hip hop and reggaeton on their new album The Takeover from I Need a Raise Records. They stick to the former, though, on the release's steady rolling title cut. A dour sample that recalls the universally recognizable "Song of the Volga Boatman" introduces the track, but it's really just a head fake. Mostly the crew is concerned with announcing their arrival in the major leagues. >More
 MadTracks -- 'Auburn' by The Gusto

Remember when a lot of English and American punk rock kinda sounded like Slade speeded up? Oasis certainly did, and they ruled Britannia for many years because of it. I'm not certain that The Gusto have achieved that high level of song-craft just yet. You know, where nearly everything they touch is immediately hummable. But the Madison band does have a rousing hybrid sound that blends hormonal punk energy and, for lack of better term, "classic rock" melody to good effect. >More
 MadTracks -- 'The Reverse' by the Eric Tessmer Band at BAMFest 2007

Austin-based guitarist Eric Tessmer and his two-man rhythm section plainly caught a contact high last year at the Belleville American Music Festival, as heard in the new live compilation album BAM Fest 2007. The youthful bluesman and his mates race through this breathless recording of "The Reverse" like a careening, nitro-fueled funny car, blistering the beat of the self-penned roadhouse shuffle and shredding its bare bones melody along the way. >More
 MadTracks -- 'On Landmines' by Crane Your Swan Neck

Pale Young Gentlemen have already made Madison safe for the dramatic, cabaret-influenced indie-rock and gypsy punk that swamped Brooklyn several years back. Consequently, the materials that make up this song by Crane Your Swan Neck -- a melancholy accordion drawn from a 19th Century dancehall, a dirge-like Tom Waits-style beat, and an elastic-voiced swain pleading his case most pathetically as he rearranges the marbles in his mouth -- aren't going to surprise anyone hereabouts. But the quality of the writing, playing and particularly the arranging on this demo version of "On Landmines" might. >More

Longtime Wisconsin bluesman Paul Filipowicz has released some aggressive studio recordings over the years, including several that have made the national blues charts. But his live album Chickenwire really shows him in a different light. Here he's pumped up and looking for a fight, and his pugnacious, self-penned blues are the better for it. >More
 MadTracks -- '(Let Me Find the Way to the Middle of Your) Heart's Desire' by Jimmy Samson

Matt Sloan and Aaron Yonda, the local lights behind Chad Vader and a heapin' handful of other goofball videos, have a new, well, goofy rock 'n' roll parody song out now on their own SexHat Records. Titled "(Let Me Find the Way to the Middle of Your) Heart's Desire," this monster power ballad composed (and sung) by their regular musical collaborator Andrew Yonda is belted out by the coke-snorting rock and roller villain Jimmy Samson. >More

Explosive, violent and for the most part terrifically precise, "The Treaty of New Echota" is definitely a feather in the collective cap of The United Sons of Toil. Make that their faded, grease-and-sweat-smeared work cap. >More
 MadTracks -- 'I'm a Disgrace' by Whatfor

Maybe I'm doing Whatfor a disservice by reviewing their song "I'm A Disgrace." After all, the brooding guitar and dissonant cello that define these two minutes of music are a marked departure from the rest of its debut album, Sooner Late Than Never. >More
