MADTRACKS

MadTracks: 'In the Heather' by Romero

On their debut full-length, Take the Potion, Madison metal trio Romero tackle the age-old challenge of the stoner-and-doom realm: balancing low-end gratification with suspense and variety. The band does not wear a monotone coat of sludge, though. >More
 MadTracks: 'ILY' by Madden

A recent EP from Solomon Brown's electronic project Madden has a track list riddled with as many acronyms as a giddy 13-year-old's text messages. It's also got lots of dingbat-typeface characters, a colorful and creepy splatter of an album cover, and a perplexing title: Tumblrwav. Is this some frightful musical dispatch from the Internet apocalypse? >More
 MadTracks: 'Ploog' by Golden Donna

Expect the unexpected when you listen to the work of Joel Shanahan, a.k.a. Golden Donna. On his new release, Gloaming Thirst, the Madison-based artist weaves together bizarre sounds and textures, including dark synths and sinister sound effects. With track titles like "He Knows You're Alone" and "Hider (In the House)," it's no wonder you will feel utterly creeped out when listening. >More
MadTracks: 'Feel Good Music' by Tefman

Last year, Madison's hip-hop community endured yet another installment of a tiresome soap opera. For those unfamiliar, it's called Local Hip-Hop Artists Don't Get Booked at Clubs Because a Few People Started Fights. But MC Dexter Patterson, a.k.a. Tefman, has started 2013 on a positive note with his solo album, Feel Good Music. The album's title track is a good accompaniment to a fresh start. >More
 MadTracks: 'Elevator' by Echo Island

Metropia is almost a bold second step for Echo Island, the instrumental electronic solo project of local musician Brad Hawes. This EP, which contains six new songs and two remixes, reprises some of the solid habits established on Echo Island's debut album, In Circles, which came out earlier this year. >More
MadTracks: 'Lost Along The Way' by Samantha Glass

Samantha Glass is not a woman but the name of the electronic music project of Madison musician Beau Devereaux, who uses old analog drum machines, a few synthesizers, a heavily processed bass guitar and his own effects-encoded singing to create a self-sufficient sonic world. >More
MadTracks: 'Locks & Looks' by Fire Retarded

After recently poring over the year's local albums to choose a set of favorites -- all while trying to acknowledge the many types of music created in Madison -- I was left feeling a bit fatigued. To scorch the ennui from my worn-out musical receptors, I've been trying out Barb's Trailer, a short EP from Fire Retarded, a new local trio with an unfortunate name but a good background. >More
MadTracks: 'Simple Man' by Scott Lamps

Good ideas tend to strike at the calmest moments, when they're least expected. A new song came to local composer Scott Lamps during the most mundane activity: washing the dishes. Called "Simple Man," it's the title track on the new album he'll release at the High Noon Saloon Monday, Dec. 10. >More
MadTracks: 'This Little Light of Mine' by Whitney Mann

I tried hard to like the music I heard during the Country Music Awards earlier this month. Real hard. That sound is to country music what Mannheim Steamroller is to Christmas music. It's country music because they say so. And they say it over and over and over, "y'all." I was still recovering from the telecast when the new Whitney Mann recording, This Little Light of Mine, landed in my hands. >More
MadTracks: 'Hot Pot Unbeliever' by Baristacide

For Madison band Baristacide, eccentricity is a near-religious habit. One would reasonably expect their songs to slather on the oddness rather thickly. And they do, but the hooks keep things on track. The song "Hot Pot Unbeliever" makes the same bet the great band Sparks did: that distractingly warped vocals and lyrics can be reconciled with catchy fundamentals. >More
