Harper's Island is damn scary

Scary series don't usually work on broadcast TV, given the frequent interruptions by Burger King commercials. But Harper's Island got under my skin. It's about a wedding party that boats into Harper's Island, the scene of shocking murders seven years ago. >More
MTV lets UW-Madison students film themselves in College Life

MTV has tapped eight underclassmen from the University of Wisconsin-Madison for an experiment in reality TV. Rather than trailing the kids with a camera crew, the network gave them their own cameras. They spent several months documenting their lives, and MTV has assembled the footage in a show called College Life. It premieres at 9:30 p.m. on Monday, April 13. >More
In the Motherhood tweaks modern attitudes

If you lack a sense of humor about "enlightened" parenting, environmental awareness, organic food and enforced sexual-harassment training on the job, stay far away from In the Motherhood. The rest of us are in for a treat. >More
 I won on Jeopardy!

One evening some weeks back I was in the middle of a pleasant trip to sunny Southern California, a welcome change from frozen Wisconsin. Earlier that day I'd seen a legendary entertainment franchise close up, as a guest at Sony Pictures Studios lot in Culver City. It was a holy-of-holies pilgrimage for a pop-culture obsessive like me. And, oh yeah, I'd won $23,600 in the space of about an hour. >More
 Cupid is hard to love

Cupid is a remake of a '90s series, but it really feels like a throwback to corny TV of the 1960s and '70s. Like Bewitched, it features a bickering mortal/immortal pair, with Sarah Paulson thrust into the thankless Darrin role -- a stick-in-the-mud perpetually exasperated by Cupid's powers. >More
Cartoon genius Chuck Jones takes an eccentric look back

Animator Chuck Jones is one of my artistic heroes, right up there with Shakespeare, Kafka and Curly of the Three Stooges. Jones is responsible for some of the greatest American cartoons -- fast, irreverent masterpieces featuring the likes of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the Roadrunner. >More
Reaper is a hell of a show

Has anyone noticed that Reaper is one of the best TV shows, like, ever? The CW doesn't get much attention for its drama/devil/comedy (hey, a new genre: dramadevildy!). But Reaper is as good as anything on the air -- not only hilarious, but sometimes even poignant. >More
A mystery novelist solves crimes in Castle

Castle begins with a naked, bloody female corpse covered in flowers. A serial killer is reenacting the plots of bestselling mystery novelist Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion), and the detective in charge of the investigation, Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), seeks Castle's help in solving the crime. >More
 F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin

Alma appears in front of you as a ghost. She is girlish, as thin as an unfed fence post, translucent white. Most of the time, Alma just stands there, or shakes your shoulders. For such a slight thing, she is the "mother of the apocalypse." Or, at least, that's her goal in the afterlife. Little girl, big plans. >More
A heavenly being spoils Saving Grace

Holly Hunter's Grace Hanadarko might be the most vivid cop on TV. In this week's episode of Saving Grace, she tries to get inside the head of a serial killer terrorizing Oklahoma City. The crimes are horrible, and Grace is on edge. >More
