First Wave program at UW-Madison provides foundation for student hip-hop performers

At first glance, Adam Levin, Andrew Thomas and Tobi Adeoye appear to be average UW-Madison undergrads. Laughing about dorm life, undecided about their majors, they're notably humble and self-effacing. But unlike many of they're peers, they're not viewing graduation as a gateway to the day-to-day grind of the real world. >More

Performers at a Valentine's Day party held in the Brink Lounge say Madison police used inappropriate force while clearing patrons from the club after a fight early Sunday morning. Four persons were arrested in the incident, including local emcee Rob Dz, and the near east side venue has now ceased booking hip-hop shows. >More
 Andy Bey keeps jazz vital

Andy Bey -- vocalist, pianist, composer -- is the most important obscure jazz artist you need to hear these days. Even if you're a die-hard jazz fan, chances are you've never heard Bey play live -- I haven't. But my old friend Bobby Baker, who played alto sax with Madison's '60s jazz fusion band Sebastian Moon and whose knowledge of the music is encyclopedic, is ahead of the pack. Bey's a genius, Baker says. "He pulls no punches with his art. His delivery's unique. He has a message to get out, a story to tell." >More
Awesome Car Funmaker prepares to switch gears

In its six years Awesome Car Funmaker's had a pretty wild ride, one that's involved a teasing war with another band, living out of a U-Haul and doing jumping jacks on stages from here to the Canadian border. But the ride is over. The band will play a farewell show Feb. 13 at the Rathskeller in the UW's Memorial Union. >More

Madison Symphony Orchestra excels with Olga Kern and three from Beethoven

An all-Beethoven lineup is pretty much a guaranteed formula for success with today's audiences. That is what the Madison Symphony Orchestra could count on in its concerts last weekend. Not content with choosing three surefire hits for the program, Maestro John DeMain then threw more fuel on the fire with exuberant and assertive direction. >More
Masses mob Der Rathskeller for Los Campesinos! and Titus Andronicus show in Madison

On certain nights it becomes obvious that the 80 year old Memorial Union was not designed for rock concerts. As hundreds of students and a few slightly stunned members of the general public packed into Der Rathskeller on Friday night to see buzz bands Los Campesinos! and Titus Andronicus, staff struggled to get tables and chairs out of the overcrowded room before the show started. >More
