A fantastic voyage through the Producers' 1980s music videos

Videos were canvases for new-wave artists, many of whom brought an art-school education and a fascination with technology to the music industry. The Producers, the new-wave band of Madison resident Kyle Henderson, were among the first to tackle the medium. They'll perform Friday night at the High Noon Saloon. But first, here's a tour of some of their vintage music videos. >More
'80s wonders the Producers bring their latest album In the Blues to Madison

It's hard to imagine the 1980s without visualizing early MTV videos by new-wave bands like Devo and the Buggles. A video stuck on repeat back then was "She Sheila" by the Producers, a group that sprang from the same Georgia music scene that spawned the B-52s. Though the Producers never achieved Blondie-level stardom, they came painfully close with a string of MTV hits and substantial radio play in the South and Midwest. >More
My top 2012 concerts in Madison were led by up-and-coming artists

One of my favorite things about Madison is that you can catch promising acts headed to Minneapolis and Chicago at small venues where it's easy to see the stage and hear every word of the performance. In 2012, these acts included the Head & the Heart, Blind Pilot and Heartless Bastards. >More
My top five albums of 2012

I felt this past year was underwhelming new-music-wise. Up until September, my favorite release of the year was a reissue of Sugar's Copper Blue with the Beaster EP included. The remastering and packaging are great. But leave it to Bob Mould himself to make one of the best albums of the year, and the best of his solo career. >More
Madison expat Shane Shane delivers 'Teenage Santa' for the holidays (video)

Madison cabaret-punk band Screamin' Cyn Cyn & the Pons are no more, but their singer, Shane O'Neill (a.k.a. Shane Shane), is making lots of joyful noises in Brooklyn, N.Y., these days. Just in time for the holidays, he's put a new spin on the legend of St. Nick with a video called "Teenage Santa." >More
The Moore Family wishes Madison 'Merry Christmas, Ya Hey!' (video)

What's that we hear? Madison's version of the Carter Family? The Osmonds? The Jacksons? The Roe Family Singers? Nah, it's Isthmus' own Andy Moore and his clan wishing us all a Merry Christmas in the 'Sconnie way. Turn it up! >More
My favorite concerts of 2012, in Madison and beyond

I was gobsmacked and awestruck. Like Richard Dreyfuss in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, I was in the thrall of a greater power. That was my reaction this fall (and it lingers to this day) to witnessing the nearly five-hour revival of Einstein on the Beach at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. I'm close to speechless trying to explain Phillip Glass' operatic meditation on the birth of the nuclear age. >More
Six of the best Madison-made songs of 2012

I'm not about to let you forget that 2012 was a supremely strange-sounding year in local music. There's even more adventure and dissonance beyond my list of 2012's best Madison-made albums, either on albums that didn't quite make the cut or from artists that slipped under my radar for most of the year. Here's a short playlist to help you close out the year on a compelling and head-scratching note. >More
Sights and sounds from the End of the World Moustache Bash at the Majestic (video)

If you're reading this, then it's safe to say the world didn't end. Take a moment to celebrate this fact. Go ahead and hug the nearest person in the room, but then consider the following: How you chose to spend the apocalypse says a lot about who you are as a person. >More
'Glitz, glamor, Las Vegas showgirls and Santa Claus': An interview with Waylan St. Palan (video)

When it begins to look a lot like Christmas around Madison, all the children, good and bad, start to anticipate the arrival of Waylan St. Palan and the Magic Elves for their annual holiday lounge show. >More
