Gallery I – CelebrARTE, Rolando Cruz & Yvette Pino
press release: CelebrARTE is an art exhibition recognizing the work of 2014 Latino Art Fair winners Rolando Cruz and Yvette Pino. Through photography and printmaking, they share their journeys of spiritual explorations and self-discovery. The exhibition runs Saturday, September 5th – Sunday, November 29th at the Overture Center for the Arts. An opening reception will be held on Friday, October 2nd from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The exhibition is the accompanying exhibition to the 3rd Annual Latino Art Fair, which will also be held at the Overture Center on Friday, October 2nd, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The artists appropriate from other cultures to reach their own self-determination and reclaim their identities. Photographer Rolando Cruz explains, “I title this exhibit "Selves" and it plays with the idea of identity. Each portrait challenges the viewer to explore and confront our own perceptions of someone’s exterior identity and how that appearance affects and effects our core emotions and prejudice.”
When describing her work printmaker Yvette Pino says, “My images are narratives built from my experiences in Iraq as a deployed soldier and overlap with symbols of my Catholic upbringing in New Mexico. I am examining imagery and symbolism from Native American themes and reinterpreting them through Illuminated Manuscript appropriation. This particular series encompasses themes from the mythological story of Cadmus and the intersection of similar storytelling in Persian and Native cultures. My investigation into this mythology has led me to question the excessive militarism in America and how faith based opinions charge this effect.”
