Where are you eating and what do you think? What's opening, closing, succeeding, failing?

Support DECENT Mexican food in Madison

Check out Francisco's Cantina downtown. Authentic Mexican fare in upscale atmosphere. Would like to see this new and interesting venture succeed. Owner is from Mexico City.
Better yet foodwise are Los Gemelos, El Bollilo (Monona), and (the ultimate of the ultimate) Taqueria Guadalajara on Park St.

I really hope Francisco's succeeds, too. We ate there last week. They had a 2 for 1 margarita special. The margaritas were great! They didn't taste like margarita mix. I got the vegetarian huarache. The tortilla was a little tougher than Taquería Guadalajara, but it was still good. He got the burrito mole. The mole sauce was better than most, but it wasn't as good as mine. However, I am lazy and rarely make it. The bill was under $20 for two meals, two drinks and chips and salsa.

The quality of the food for the money is good. Almost everything is under $10. The service was friendly. The owner introduced himself. The location is more convenient for me than Taquería Guadalajara. The dining room is also more spacious. We will be back.

went to los gemelos yesterday (have been there three times previously).

As always, the food was great, as is the price.

The only problem we had was the tripe stew, inadvertently ordered by my friend.

I think one has to grow up eating tripe in order to enjoy it.

I had two bites, as I am usually a lover a all food.

But I could not stomach it (no pun intended).

But it is my favorite mexican in town.

6 of us ate for $30.

I try and try but have yet to enjoy it. But to those 'in the know' they can't get enough of it.

Try and try the ox tongue and tripe at Ichiban. Not Mexican, I know, but awe-inspiringly tender and delicioso.

Antojitos El Toril is the Mexican torch I carry, but Pan and Pan has a mighty fine chorizo taco, and the bakery is on-par with (the inconveniently western but lovely) La Concha.

As an aside, does anyone know why La Mestiza didn't make a go of it at that location? Their restaurant on Odana is one of my favorite Mexican places.

While i appreciate La Mestiza, I feel they prey on relatively wealthy Madisonians. Its good food, but their prices are a bit out-of-touch. Count how many Mexicans are in La Mestiza the next time you're there.

There's nothing wrong with catering to the white man, but 'authentic' doesn't come to mind when I'm there.

Wealthy? I don't know how much the late downtown La Mestiza charged, but the prices at the Odana location are reasonable, about the same as at El Pastor, which has a large Mexican clientele.

Whatever you do, don't go to Cilantros. It would not be authentic in your book.

Dinner for three with a few drinks and an app is over $100. For MEXICAN. Thats relatively pricey in my book.

Mexican food does not have to be cheap to be authentic. We're not talking Mexican street food here. I shouldn't have to pay what I do for steak at a restaurant given how much it costs at the store. La Mestiza is unique in that it is Oaxacan style Mexican food. It is also more upscale with fresher ingrediants than some place like El Pastor(which is still good)

La Mestiza has a great lunch menu and it is very reasonably priced. Their dinner menu is a couple dollars higher than El Pastor or Los Gemelos, but their menu is cheaper than Casa de Lara and about the same as Laredos whichI think sucks.

I suspect your high bill was due to the drinks. Margaritas perhaps? Anywhere you go that'll set you back 6-8 bucks a drink.

Authentic Mexicans don't drink margaritas.
