help! ?where to dine in the Dells?!

Where are you eating and what do you think? What's opening, closing, succeeding, failing?

help! ?where to dine in the Dells?!

Postby Big_Sister » Fri May 18, 2012 9:17 am

It's like this: I'm in the Dells, having been conscripted as tourguide due to my Madison residence.

After an execrable dinner last night, I'm (slightly desperately) seeking advice where to feed my entourage this evening. We are a small group, mostly female, ranging in age from late 40s to mid 80s with moderately adventurous palates, but after last night, decent "American" or, say, Italian sounds about right. ...Preferably with no adolescent servers who address a group as described as "guys".

Thank you in advance for any input!

We are in the area more often than most Madison people. It's not my favorite spot for eating. The one standout for me is the High Rock Cafe in downtown Dells.

If you don't mind a small drive, the Little Village Cafe in Baraboo is nice. If you are a beer fan, the Corner Pub in Reedsburg makes it own. The food is fine; the pale ale is excellent. It looks just the the stereotypical corner bar; the brewing equipment is hidden the basement.

Other than the Cheese Factory (vegetarian) and maybe a burger at Monk's I have given up on the Dells.

Please let us know if you find anything else worth going to. I am up there quite often due to the in-laws.

Out of curiousity, was your bad experience at Sarento's? We had a few decent meals there in the past (going by Dells standards) and their signature salad was better than most. However we went there last fall and probably will never go back. Salads were old (from day or 2 before?), the crappy breadsticks they now give were barely warm/still frozen in the middle, and a couple of the high-school aged wait staff were not just flirting, but practically humping eachother next to our table. We just about walked out.

I will second the recommendation for Little Village Cafe in Baraboo.

The Sprecher restaurant isn't too bad.

That's the most glowing review I can give for something in the Dells.

It is on the expensive end, but I've never been disappointed in the Del-Bar. In fact, I keep trying to come up with plans to get us there again.

When I searched the link up, I noticed mentions of happy hour and early bird specials, which may work for you and help to cut costs. Actually, I have found on vacation that we (as a family) often find ourselves at a restaurant at early-bird times, just because we are tired and starving by that point in the day.

That said, everywhere else we have been in the Dells tourist zone has been mediocre to satisfactory, which I have accepted just as I have accepted blaring pop tunes and neck tattoos at the waterparks.

You could always go full-on supper club and take them to Ishnala on Mirror Lake, just a short drive from the dells.

Always had an excellent time at Field's. Outstanding service and great food. They always rose to the occasion whether I was with VIP's from work or just out with family and friends.

River's Edge on county A. Excellent food, unique wildlife decor\interior design with huge aquarium. Stocked with native Wisconsin fish. So good and reasonably priced that even the locals go there.
