Supergroup ....... ?

Who's making noise in and around Madison? What's new in the business of making music around town? Review shows and CDs here. Please keep all hype in Hype Exchange.

Supergroup ....... ?

Postby Helliphant » Sat Feb 17, 2007 1:17 pm

I've noticed a trend lately to call new bands that contain members of other venerable bands in this city "supergroup", including a couple of my own bands. Why is this necessary? Does it REALLY draw more folks to shows or does it merely make people vomit? What's the benefit?

A lot of musicians here play with multiple bands, are they all supergroups? When does the supergroup mania end?

I thought true supergroups were composed of bored rockstars with nothing better to do than form bands to make more money. Sometimes these offshoots turn out pretty good (Raconteurs come to mind) but some truly blow (Audioslave).

Please, make it stop.

That would be super.

(Not really bitching, just happened to notice an upward trend in the use of the word here in Madison)

I don't know anything about local bands.

If you could put together a supergroup who would be in it (include instrument they would play)? You're not allowed to include anyone that's already famous outside of the area. Can pick anyone that's still alive and played in Madison within last 10 years.

I guess mine is more of a "stupor-group" as we're all stunned that we can all be in 10 other bands and still manage to get drunk and remember how the songs go.

Oh the hype with such things...
Being in one of these so called "SUPERGROUPS" (they do apparently deserve
caps), lets take a look at what we really are.

A: Mere mortals. Rockn mortals though...
B: Super-1. Above;over;upon:super-impose.2. Superior in size,quality,number, or degree;superfine. 3. Exceeding a norm: supersaturate.
(so based on size of band weight, were probably on the border of super just because we're a five peice and one or two of us drinks alot). The more you have the superer you are according to American Heritage Dictionary.

I can't even try to be witty right now cause im too "spirited". And to be honest im not that witty anyway.
But above all with "SUPERGROUPS"....the definition should simply be....
"A group of local musicians who havent moved out of town!"

Off the topic....
Local "SUPERGROUP" QWADD (featuring members and former members of
Tormentula,Shotdown,Merrick,Pachinko,Sailor Harlette,His and Hers Vanities, and The Suit are going to be recording the beginning of March.
The result will be "SUPER"!

I'm the offender that used the term, "supergroup" in my Helliphant review. I've always wanted to use that term in an article since I first heard it referred to for Tracii Guns/Michael Schenker/Bobby Blotzer group, Contraband, in an issue of Guitar for the Practicing Musician in 1991.

According to Wikipedia, :"In the late 1960s, the term supergroup was coined to describe music groups composed of members who had already achieved fame or respect in other groups or as individual artists."

Uncle Eddie, The Skintones, Mr. Brownstone, Echo-Static, 4xDaily, etc... are all bands that have earned my respect and local notoriety since I started listening to and performing music in Madison, so the term was used appropriately and I refuse to take it back.

And I listened to "Bullshit" this morning, it's a fantastic song.

Supergroup: a bunch of musicians playing the same tired shit they played in their last band, only with some other tired people who are equally guilty of dragging out their same couple of ideas. No offense to anyone who's been dubbed a "supergroup" but to me it tends to mean that the band will not make a new contribution to music.
