Can't wait.

That's a great gig and the organizers are very good people. Hopefully you are the only band. Last year they had a local band open for us that drove everyone away. And watch out for drunk clowns trying to get up on stage and play congas.

Leave the congas at home. Check.

weird gig

Postby mcmx » Wed Mar 21, 2007 10:28 am

Spooner opening for Iron Maiden at Summerfest, 1984. Were originally scheduled to play with Greg Kihn Band, who cancelled, and we ended up on the Maiden show. Two sets of catcalls and lots of stage-bound missiles. Crowd was ugly, and pogoing Marko had to eventually be rescued by the security guys. However, not as scary overall as you might imagine. Hitting the thrown objects back with our guitar necks became a game. Afterwords got the meet the nice Iron Maiden fellows, who were sympathetic to our sorry plight. Eddie mask guy was walking around backstage. Surreal overall.

Playing at Lefty's Bar in Green Bay. This guy in the crowd is physically harassing our bass player to the point where said bass player unplugs, mid-song and chased the guy into the ladies bathroom, with a mic stand ready to pummel him. He collected the door money that night.

we opened for mudvayne two nights in a row at the house of blues when 'the end of all things to come' was released and had LOTS of pennies thrown at us. apparently teenagers can't afford the more painful quarter denomination.

I would have personally doubled your take from the door just to witness that.

Gigs

Postby newlow » Fri Mar 23, 2007 12:50 pm

I have played a 4H barn, a dirt floor basement that was literally dug larger to accommodate the drum kit, a home for runaways, a strip club, an S&M bar, multiple garages, many livingrooms, several farms (including silos), inside an empty bowl at a skateboard park, inside my van (for Tracy's 060606 party) but the most interesting has to be a wig factory.

Did Shick ever tell you about our horrible tribute band idea? A Donnas music cover band comprised of dudes that dress like mob bosses ... The Dons.

Played a gig in Burnsville, Minnesota.

The promoter was putting together a "festival." He had like 12 electronic bands from around the mdiwest. Apparenlty the venue owners offered him some support so he booked the "Burnsville Garage" as the place it was going to be held.

First, it was way out in the boonies.

Second, the "Burnsville Garage" was in fact, a garage. It was a "community center" that had been made out of part of the Burnsville City Fleet Garage. So we're playing in a converted truck garage right next door to where they keep the city garbage trucks.

Third, it was an all-ages show where pretty much NOBODY over the age of 17 showed up. They coulda cared less that there were bands playing. Also we had to smuggle in *bottled water*.

Finally, the venue...er, the city...decided to be dicks about paying the bands so the promoter ended up paying us out of pocket.

At least the sound guy they had was pretty competant.

When was this? You should check out the Burnsville Garage now, it's got a skatepark, a stage, big screen with a projection system, etc... it's a fairly awesome place to play.

This was early last summer. It may have had a few of those things - it did have a stage - but if so they were all gone to make way for a bunch of bands the kids didn't care about.

It was pretty dire. A bunch of late 20-something/early-30-something out-of-town bands trying to appeal to a bunch of teenage emo kids. Just didn't happen.

Although one underage girl was totally macking on our bass player.

1. My friend Zach and I played at an open mike at a coffee-house on Monroe for a contest, prize being free studio time somewhere. Back then (2000) it was not unusual for us to pack a stripped down drumset, just to play 3 songs at Cafe Assissi. We thought we had a shot at winning. But we found that this coffeehouse was a total frat hangout, packed that night, and our weird avant playing was definitely not what they were there to hear. A sorority girl who played like Lisa Kudrow- Smelly Cat stuff, won the contest.

2. A show put on by Art Paul Schlosser at OK's (1998), actually a great show, he was a good MC and was branching out into keyboards at the time.

3. The video arcade show at Stevens Point (1997.) We were pretty high (on life!) and surrounded by video games. For our next show we would learn the music to Burger Time.

4. The Blue Tarp show (1998). Playing underneath a blue tarp on State Street, the day after Maxwell Street days.

Thanks so much for your comment on my performance at OKs-APS
