When the Bot and also The Shabs mastered with Tom Blain we had to go back out to Evansville and remaster a couple tunes. That's kinda how he works though - he wants you to go home and listen to the mastered songs, let 'em soak in, and then decide if you like 'em or if you want some changes made. We really appreciated his attitude and willingness to redo stuff if we thought it needed a slightly different tweek.

getting it done locally is a fine idea.

otherwise, I use WestWest Side (NYA area), Hanzsek Audio (Seattle) and John Golden (So Cal). all these places do a good job as well.

There's the additional issue of "how much are you willing to pay" and "what's your source quality?"

If you're recording in your garage through a 8-year-old Soundblaster128, then it doesn't make sense to play $1000 for mastering. If you rented DNA or Smart for a weekend and have a pristine and flawless mix then it doesn't make sense to cheap out. Etc.
