Recomendations

Postby McSwain » Sat Nov 14, 2009 6:56 pm

HEy gang,
I have been living up here for a couple of years and am now getting ready to step out and see what the scene here has to say for itself. Any recommendations of Bands/clubs to check out? I am more of a Rock guy, but am open to suggestions.

hey mcswain,
i guess it would depend on what type of rock you're into... madison has quite the diverse band scene, and a little more detail might help the good citizens of this forum get a better idea of what you're looking for.

JBALT,
I am a big fan of just about everything Rock, with the minor exception of Jam bands. Never got The Dead/Phish/widespread panic etc. In my yout, I was big into the late 80's-mid 90's hard rock scene in Chicago. Dabbled in the Alt scene at places like Metro, Avalon etc. Not sure how tha would translate today, at almost 40, its hard to go to a bar to see a band of kids and not look like the bass players Dad in the crowd.

Try a mohawk.

Then you at least will look like a crazy dad.

Madison is a great place for more mature music lovers. There's always a bunch of us in the crowd who are pushing 40, or like me watching 40 fade into the past.

Midwest Beat tonight, The Hemlines or KnuckelDrager or USoT tomorrow are good places to start.

Yeah, I'll second the USoT show. Probably one of the better introductions to the town scene being at the Union and all.

There's also music off the Isthmus. Different music. Cover bands, Harder more mainstream Rock and even some bands that play on the Isthmus make it off sometimes and vice versa.

Dry Bean
Badger Bowl (I really hate this place though)
Scatz in Midleton
Club Tavern (horrible sound some nights though)
There will be a greater percentage of people your own age at these places than downtown. Not that that's what you're going for or anything.

Yeah but KnuckelDrager tomorrow is gonna be something else.

And I like Cherry Pie sometimes.

I don't mind the room or the stage and you bring your own sound so that can be pretty good sometimes too but:
1) they kick everyone out at like 1:15 regardless. Even on NYE when they can stay open all night
2) Booking agent is a pain and takes too much money.
3) Their drinks are overpriced and weak as hell. Unacceptably so. Drink only beer at the Badger Bowl.
4) They don't give 1 single beverage or discount to band members. Not one.

Cherry Pie is in no way my type of thing but I have seen them. They do what they do extremely well and draw a crowd looking to have fun.

Very bad form.

My neighbor has played there in a few bands. He makes more in one night then most of us make in a year. If you can draw that kinda makes up for no free drinks.

Wait.

No it doesn't.

Exactly. I like watching the crowd better then watching the band. Small doses and all.
