Madison Vinyl Pressing Plants

Postby RockOfTheArts » Tue Oct 12, 2010 9:52 pm

We have some friends that are searching the country for used vinyl record pressing equipment. Anyone have any knowledge of Madison music history involving vinyl record operations? Is it possible that some of the equipment may still exist in some forgotten corner of the city?

Cuca/Sara Studios in Sauk City had their own pressing equipment. I don't know that I've ever heard of anyone in Madison operating a vinyl pressing plant ... most of the local records in the '60s-'70s were done as custom jobs at Cuca, or thru various custom press arrangements in Chicago and elsewhere.

Cuca's owner is still in operation - he'd know far more specific information than my conjectures on where people were getting stuff pressed other than Cuca.

Does this mean someones thinkin' bout starting a pressing plant in Madison?!
That'd be pretty rad. I know I'd probably use it for Kind Turkey (if the prices were comparable to United that is).

Just an FYI, Sooper Dooper has been doing vinyl packages for awhile now. Cheaper then United, especially if you pick up locally.

Brad, really?! I'm not looking for the art done, I'm looking for vinyl pressed. Can you guys do first 100 on color?

Let's chitchat about this more, cuz I have a hard time believing the a small company could beat the price of United (although I'm well aware they've got a pretty captive market, but I just have a hard time seeing how a small company could get close to competing)....

Brad,
I e-mailed Chris, so we'll see what he sez about a price quote. And I'll let the peeps know here if I end up going with him since it would be excellent if I could support sooper dooper instead of the Man.

Yeah note to everyone.
Sooper Dooper has great pricing on getting a whole package deal of 7". The only downside is that includes only black vinyl and printing jackets from them. Which isn't a downside if that's what you're going for. But for Kind Turkey we're always doing 100 on color first, and we're doing screen-printed jackets by a close friend of mine. So we're sorta too nitpicky to make use of Chris' deal, which is a good one and will undoubtedly utilize when the time comes for getting printed jackets instead of screen-printed.
