Quicksilver with or without Dino Valenti? The difference is like two completely different bands to me.

As I pack up my house in preparation for the big move, I'm listening to lots of Z104. Current faves in the Z mix: Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass"; Ellie Goulding, "Lights"; Adele, "Rumour Has It"; and, yes, Carly Rae Jepsen, "Call Me Maybe." And I still get very excited when "Forget You" comes on. And "Sexy and I Know It." And anything Ke$ha. And Britney Spears is still my good luck charm.

Ah, the Z.

"Call Me Maybe" has those great string hits. Listen to the breakdown: the producers add a bass octave 1 bar in, and then you get those clever filigrees. Monster hook.

I enjoy the early stuff with Dino and even that brief period after he left when Nicky Hopkins joined the band, but I can't stand the stuff when Dino came back into the fold and was terribly strung out. Lately I've been digging some neat outtakes for "What About Me". The juxtaposition between John Cippolina's vibrato and Dino's acoustic is sweet. Cips is one of the most underrated guitarists.

Speaking of underrated musicians, check out The Garbage Men:

Satisfaction by The Garbage Men

OK, maybe they need a little more rehearsal.

I've been on a Donovan kick the past 2 weeks. My teenager is pleading with me to put something else in the car cd player! Seriously, I'd forgotten how talented Donovan is and how the guy could really "swing", especially with some of the "back up" musicians he utilized. Plus his solo version of Codiene just drips...

The new version of Weasels Ripped My Flesh by Frank Zappa. The Zappa family has the rights to all of Frank's stuff now, and they've put out cleaned up versions of the catalog, mixed like Frank mixed them rather than as the record companies released them. Makes a bigger difference on some albums than others (Hot Rats, for instance). Weasels has never sounded better, squeaks and squawks and all. The restored version of Directly from My Heart to You is a highlight.
