My first "house" in college (at UW-Oshkosh) in the summer of 1969. As free as any man can be. I throw some Cream on the turntable: Buh, buh, buh, buh, BUP, buh. Buh, buh, buh, buh, BUP. I FEEL FREE. Then Clapton's guitar does a chord progression. It caught me by the ears and set me flying. Of course, the ganja was very good in them there days. (Unlike a certain former president, I did ...)

All of which is to say, it depends where you are at the time. Yes, you can have many favorites, if you've lived a fortunate life.

No shit; in this day and age, it's O.K. to admit you went to UW-Oshkosh.

I don't think there can be just one all-time favorite since there's so much out there yet to hear, but I usually say my favorite song is Dillinger Four's "Doublewhiskeycokenoice" and that's true as much as I can say anything is my favorite. My iPod's most-played is The Lawrence Arms' "Are You There Margaret? It's Me, God." I simply must listen to this song (and the entire album) every time I drive through Chicago.

When I was a kid I'd make my parents play "Ruby Tuesday" by the Stones over and over in the car, and when I was a teenager it was "The Wreck of the Old 97" off of Johnny Cash's San Quentin album that I never grew tired of. My father's favorite Dylan song was "She Belongs to Me" while my mother's was "Girl From the North Country." I was always partial to "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere." And I remember that as kids my sister and I used to absolutely love Canned Heat's "Going up the Country" which was on some 60's cassette compilation from Citgo.

Several:

"This Time The Dream's On Me" (Best version by E. Fitzgerald)
"Cry Me A River"
"You'll Never Walk Alone" (Rogers & Hammerstein)
"My Foolish Heart"

...(for some strange reason):

"Native New Yorker" by Odyssey

"Still Ill" by The Smiths (or maybe "Bigmouth Strikes Again")
"Allison" by Elvis Costello
"Blue Monday" by New Order
"Creep" by Radiohead
"Fall On Me" by R.E.M.

Pretty hard to just pick a few songs, much less only one. Somehow there's no Pixies in there, though I'd consider that my favorite band. Maybe I just find choosing one Pixies song too difficult.

Saw this in the "recent posts" just by thread title, thought it was a dumb topic, then realized I started it, at which point I revised my opinion and decided it's an awesome topic.

I'm proud to report that two years later, "Radar Love" is indeed still my absolute fav, though in the last two years, "Memphis" by Carl Perkins has made a stunning leap to the number two spot.

Bump
Henry Vilas wrote:"Layla" by Derek and the Dominos. First heard it in a bar in Norfolk, Va. back in my sailor days. I had already been a Clapton and Allman Brothers fan, so what's not to like.

Still is.

Favorite new song: "Beg, Steal or Borrow" by Ray LaMontange and the Pariah Dogs.
