You could have stopped right there.

It's Barry's world - we just live in it.

Well, this is confusing. That being said, now that we've opened this can of worms, I have some opinions too.

#1 - Love & Curses - Reigning Sound
#2 - Raditude - Weezer
#3 - Jay Reatard - Watch Me Fall
#4 - Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
#5 - Felice Brothers - Yonder Is The Clock
#6 - Ida Maria - Fortress Around My Heart (not sure if this is "officially" this year or last year, but I got in to it early this year)
#7 - Pains of Being Pure At Heart (self titled)
#8 - Flaming Lips - Embryonic
#9 - Mark Olson & Garoy Louris - Ready For The Flood
#10 - Vivian Girls - Everything Goes Wrong

AND, here are a bunch of other albums that I really liked that came out this year...

(album title first now - not sure why)

* Hold Time - M. Ward
* Bitte Orca - Dirty Projectors
* The Blueprint 3 - Jay Z
* Ghostdini - Ghostface Killa
* Dark Was The Knight (Dangermouse / Mark Linkous / David Lynch)
* Fate To Fatal EP - The Breeders
* Telekinesis! (self titled)
* Paul Westerburg - PW & The Ghost Kids
* John Parish & PJ Harvey - A Woman A Man Walked By
* Peter, Bjorn & John - Living Thing
* Memory Tapes
* MF Doom - Born Like This
* Love Language (self titled)
* Wilco (The Album) - Wilco
* Varshons - The Lemonheads
* Wolfgang Amadeus - Phoenix
* All My Friends Are Funeral Singers - Califone
* My World - Lee Fields & The Expressions

<edit - looking through my ipod, I missed these...>

* Willie & The Wheel - Willie Nelson & Asleep At The Wheel
* Wavves
* Mirah - (A)spera
* AC Newman (forget the title name)
* Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle
* Casiotone For The Painfully Alone - Vs. Children
* Megafuan - Gather, Form & Fly
* Smith & Westerns
* Daniel Johnston - Is And Always Was

...and many "older than 2009" things that I got in to last year, including Annette Hanshaw, John Fahey, Bobby Darin, Thelonius Monk, Louis Prima, Tangerine Dream, and continued digging in to the seemingly endlessly awesome recordings of Nina Simone, Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, Alice Coltrane and Ray Charles.

My top ten, as determined on a slow day at work back in December:

#10: Titus Andronicus - The Airing of Grievances
#9: The Von Ehrics - Loaded
#8: Blueheels - The Only Dance You Know
#7: Nakatomi Plaza - Ghosts
#6: Justin Townes Earle - Midnight At The Movies
#5: The Thermals - Now We Can See
#4: Bomb the Music Industry! - Scrambles
#3: Yesterday's Ring - Diamonds in the Ditch
#2: Flatbear - Flying Days
#1: Lucero - 1372 Overton Park

I technically cheated on Titus Andronicus since it came out in '08 and was re-released in '09. I had the Felice Bros. at #19. I also had a ton of "older that '09" albums that were favorites last year.

Rooms - s/t (self-released)
Sophisticated interlocking guitar parts that build enthralling post-punk songs rivaling anything EVER raved about by the NME. This Indianapolis band is proves that songwriting is not only not a dirty word, but it’s something to aspire to. Compare this to any of the recent wave of brit-pop except that this band has some real balls and serious talent.

Madraso - Van Horne (Pseudo Recordings)
Furious and cerebral noise-rock from Seattle. A wide array of guitar sounds and techniques slathered over a distinctly J-Lizard-like rhythm section indelicately seasons songs with lots of interesting twists and turns.

Franz Ferdinand - Blood (Domino)
A dub freak-out loosely based on “Tonight”: ultra-deep bass lines, synths from outer space, and studio trickery galore. King Tubby and Scratch Perry would be proud.

Kowloon Walled City - Gambling on the Richter Scale (Perpetual Motion Machine)
The Bay area wrecking machine have more in common with a steamroller than a band — flattening everything in their way with impossibly heavy riffs and truly tortured vocals. They channel AmRep through a decidedly metallic filter.

Andorra Atkins - Augenlied (self-released)
Brilliant modern experimental post-hardcore from Germany. Their masterful use of dynamics and rhythm elevate these songs to spine tingling.

Alpinist - Minus.Mensch (Phobiact Records)
More German speed freaks mixing metal and hardcore in a way that seems both fresh and claustrophobic at the same time.

Jesu - Opiate Sun (Caldo Verde)
Former Godflesh mastermind Justin Broadrick continues to release slabs of fuzzy noise enveloping heartbreaking melodies. This is the best thing he’s done thus far under the Jesu moniker.

Ghost Monkey - Bound (Chillingo)
A soundrack available as a download for purchasers of Zen Bound, a game for the iPhone. It’s a sublime (bordering on transcendent) mix of glitchy drums, acoustic bass, and bells. (The game is excellent too.)

Guns of Brixton - Cap Adare (L’assaut Fantôme/Believe)
French post-metal band that constantly gets sucked into flights of dub fancy. Not as dubby and experimental as their previous records but quite a ride nontheless.

Cougar - Patriot (Ninja Tune)
More rock than Tortoise and less electronic glitch than Four Tet. They confoundingly bend guitars of all sorts into post-rock excursions with bite.

This is definitely better than the original album. Those songs are "ok" but not really up to the standard of their first album, which has mostly really good songs. Still, I wish more bands would do this, specifically Spoon.
