I opened my email box this morning to find a bunch of messages from old music cohorts on Chilton's passing. Sad indeed. While heartening to know that his music will continue to influence songwriters today and tomorrow, his loss always brings pause for a big "what if". What if Big Star achieved the commercial success commensurate with the quality of their music? Could have been the cure for the music morass of the 70's, raising the bar for mainstream music from the 80's onward. At least he was able to see his influence on other musicians during his lifetime, and hopefully found some satisfaction in that.

This is the kind of news that feels like a punch in the gut when you're not ready. I hate life's cheap shots. Hate it.

This is an awesome story about Will Rigby hunting down Alex Chilton and finding that he was remarkably easy to find.

I pretty much like everything Alex Chilton ever recorded (especially the solo stuff, actually) and this is some bad news.

I always has a weak spot for that old dated number of his "What's Your Sign?" I saw him at the Club Tavern years ago (& the Club de Wash before that) and got a kick out of him still hitting those high notes. Liked "B-A-B-Y" and "In the Street" also.

From the Replacements song: "If he died in Memphis wouldn't that be cool?"

I saw Alex Chilton at the East End, back when it was still there. He played nothing but covers; in particular, I remember him doing "Aligator Man."

Afterwards I went up to him and shook his hand. He seemed kind of uncomfortable about it, but was gracious if somewhat diffident.

Stroke it, Noel.
